What is your defintion of "Central NC"?

According to the Army Corp of Engineers it's way down in Star, NC in Montgomery County

Sit out on the front porch and drink.

For a change of pace, you can sit out on the back porch and drink.

Stuff I do with my kid to fill a day other than playgrounds:
NC Museum of Life and Science - Durham (This place is epic. Almost all of it is interactive exhibits and learn through play spaces. We have a membership and on a good day we're able to get through about 20% of the place)
Marbles - Raleigh (good for rainy days, like the NCMOLS but much smaller and all indoors.)
NC Museum of Art - Raleigh (They have a bunch of great outdoor space that kids love to explore
NC Museum of Natural Sciences - Raleigh (Brand new redesign, my son hates it, but he's 2, most kids over the age of 4 find the place fascinating)

Check some event venue websites like Koka Booth, the Art Museum and http://www.godowntownraleigh.com/ for special events on the days your in town.

The Carolina Theatre in Durham is another option for rainy days, though the chances of finding an appropriate film for a 6 year old are pretty slim.

As for east, I don't know of much. There are several military museum in Fayetville and of course any further east and you've got the coast.

Yeah, if you're willing to cart your kid from Selma to Durham, then the science museum is the tits and can waste a whole day. Otherwise there's Marbles in Raleigh, a hojillion parks, and movie theaters too.

Hexagon Wake Park in Benson, NC. Water is still pretty chilly though.
