If you ever found yourself in Miami, Florida or any other Spanish speaking country you could converse with the locals.

Learning a new language helps you express yourself in your native tongue better, and (in my case) it helps you organize your thoughts.

I wish I had take. Spanish in high school and college instead of French. I would be much more functional today in navigating the mean streets of 'Murica

Fluency or proficiency in another language is a huge plus in any job. I'm about to start Rosetta Stone spanish and possibly do french later. Spanish proficiency would also be extremely helpful if you plan to move anywhere like Texas, California, Florida, etc.

I thought Spanish was REALLY easy. I took it each year from grades 6-12, plus two more courses at NCSU.. I haven't taken a spanish class or picked up a book since Fall 1997 and I'm still a good conversational speaker (I can read it tons easier than I understand it spoken, I don't use it a lot these days).

Fast forward to this year. In my free time, I've been studying the beginning levels of French and Russian (I wanted one of them to have a different character set). I'm having a hard time with both. They're not impossible, it's just really slow going... not like Spanish was.

The thing is, Spanish can't be that much easier. I know lots of people who took French in HS and picked it right up. That's why I'm thinking that it's just much easier to learn new languages as a kid.... and really hard when you're turning into a geezer

Anyways, as for the benefits:

- The Hispanic population is growing like crazy, and it's a lot easier to do business with or go on a date with with someone you can communicate with. From 2000 to 2011, the number of native Hispanics increased by 57.2%, and foreign born Hispanics went up by 32.9%. That equals out to 51,927,158 people that you could talk to!!1

- Lots of times, I'm able to figure out what some other foreign words mean because they sound a lot like their spanish counterpart.

- If you actually learn it well enough, it makes you more valuable to lots of employers.

- It doesn't happen as much as I hoped, but sometimes you can hear people spanish speaking about you or others in the room/area... and it REALLY fucks with them if you butt into the conversation to stick up for yourself, or talk about whoever they are talking about

if I think of more, I will post them. Back to my Russian alphabet lesson. I chose russian for my other character set language cause it looks so mean. Well, Arabic actually looks the toughest, but sword language fucks with my head

Actually, people that know more than one language have a much higher incidence of "words on the tip of the tongue" and getting tongue-tied.

Personally, I think that one of the greatest benefits of being able to communicate in another language is the personal growth you experience from a) gaining humility by struggling to communicate and realizing how hard many immigrants have worked to come start a new life in amurrica and b) gaining empathy by realizing that people are mostly the same everywhere, despite outward appearances. there's not that many words that exist in spanish and not in english and vice versa, which tells you that people of different cultures and regions still fundamentally have the same thoughts.
