I'm shocked there isn't a thread on this already. The movie was absolutely spectacular.
I re-read the book a couple of days before going to see it and was very impressed with the accuracy of the story. A few things were missing but it didn't take away from the story as a whole. 5/10/2013 3:51:35 PM |

Yeah, that's why the book ends when Gatsby and Daisy are reunited.
OH WAIT.

more tragedy than "love story". sure, you can read plenty more into the story if you'd like, but the whole dang thing hinges on gatsby's obsession with daisy. 5/10/2013 9:53:46 PM |

did you watch it? While there was a lot of style, I feel like it was there to enhance the story, not BE the story as is often the case.5/11/2013 12:34:08 PM |

I actually really like Strictly Ballroom, but I think if he'd had the money then to make it look as garish as possible, it would've suffered.
I almost walked out of Moulin Rouge in the first five minutes. Jesus. 5/11/2013 11:32:38 PM |

I'm not going to lie I thought this was decent. It was nothing amazing but I think it touched on the parts of the book I thought stood out the most. The visual style was impressive. Yet, I've just never liked Leo in anything. 5/12/2013 11:03:39 PM |

I didn't like Leo when Titanic and Romeo+Juliet came out, I avoided him for a while and never saw The Beach or Man in the Iron Mask.
But then came Catch Me if You Can, gangs of New York, The Departed, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island, Inception...he's done some pretty good things in his time. 5/13/2013 6:33:45 PM |

Haven't seen Django yet but I plan to.
Regardless, this is a decent movie. As a huge fan of the book, I really enjoyed how the story was told. I didn't quite like the psychiatrist scenes but it made sense as a method of telling a story written through internal monologue.
I REALLY enjoyed the Buchanans and the Wilsons. Great casting calls all around. 5/13/2013 9:27:18 PM |

I really enjoyed the movie but why did they go with a lot of modern/hip hop music in some scenes. Seemed really out of place and an odd choice. 5/16/2013 10:30:49 PM |

^ Luhrmann loves those anachronistic touches. Nothing more to it than that.
HOLY FUCK DO I HATE CGI SETS
It's not such a big deal when they digital composite things like traffic and explosions, but this total green screen deal for easily replicable environments usually looks like garbage.

Here's a question: a lot of people (not just in this thread) are making a big deal about the music, but I didn't hear a lot of complaints like that about Django Unchained. Is it just because GG is such an "iconic" story that you shouldn't play around with it? 5/17/2013 2:38:35 AM |

that weird remix toward the end of django totally took me out of it
but so did the super loud woman sitting directly beside me. so I haven't said much about django in general because it didn't really get a fair unhampered-by-obnoxious-people viewing

There is just not a lot to sample from during the civil war era. At least, not nearly as much compared the GG era. Also, Django was an original story and each song fit very well to the story.
The bottom line is that was one of the best eras in American music, and I guess that you would just expect to hear more relevant tunes.

Except that the best stuff hadn't started yet. The film takes place in 1922. Rhapsody in Blue, which is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time and was used at the first party in the movie, was first performed in 1924.

Yeah its one thing to CGI something thats moving around and you don't get a chance to focus in on too much but if its something static just build the set already.5/17/2013 6:03:23 PM |

I saw it last night and surprisingly enjoyed it. The visuals and the roaring twenties feel were definitely the best parts. It seems like a lot of people hated the music but i thought it gave a fun, modern taste to the movie. 5/30/2013 9:13:11 AM |

The only purpose of it is to make the movie more "fun". I don't like "fun" movies. The plot and setting were dumbed down as a whole for mass audiences.

Great book, good movie.
Party scenes were awesome. The Great Gatsby is not strictly a period piece, so the modern music didn't detract.
I love Leo, but there were too many close ups. The movie should have cultivated more mystery about Gatsby like in the book; before his complete vulnerability is revealed. 6/2/2013 12:03:25 AM |
