It seems a little over the top. Couldn't she have just gotten more regular screenings (monthly or quarterly) to continue checking for breast cancer? I would think that even a 13% chance of not developing breast cancer and avoiding massively invasive surgery would be worth trading more regular checkins/mammograms/etc.
The ovarian cancer risk I would actually be more preventative with, mostly because it seems like a lot more difficult cancer to routinely check for. 5/15/2013 4:13:08 AM

I would probably agree with that, but then again, breast cancer can easily migrate into other areas of the body pretty damn fast.
This is definitely an ease off the mind as a preventative step considering her mother died from cancer years before at an early age. I mean if her family didn't have a history of cancer, then yeah, monthly checks would be in order, but if I was in her place and saw first hand what cancer would do to a person and knew that I personally had an 87% higher chance than the next person to develop the illness, I would probably done exactly what she had done.
Not to mention, even if she did caught breast cancer early, the risk afterwards for remission within a few years is abnormally high and those tend to migrate to other areas of the body. Plus the current cancer fighting drugs and treatment tends to a very difficult process to endure, even after the cancer was gone. 5/15/2013 6:36:59 AM

You should also factor in that her mother died of breast cancer. I'm sure that was a huge part of the decision for her.

False.
This procedure has taken 3 months of surgeries and recoveries. Not only did she have the breast removed to prevent breast cancer, but she had the reconstructive surgery for fake breasts at the same time. So her breasts will likely be the same size, they'll just be fake instead of real. 5/15/2013 7:42:36 AM

Her boobs started to sag after the kids.
She wanted to get them done, but was worried about seeming vain.
Now people are talking about how brave she is for getting a boob job.
Great success. 5/15/2013 7:54:33 AM

it's great that she talks about how expensive the brca test is (about $3,000). My mom has ovarian cancer and I'm going to get tested one day (when I can afford it) and if it comes back with 87 % chance or even 65 and above, I'd get my ovaries out faster that you can say "sunny-side up"

check with your insurance. they might cover it.
23andme tests for selected mutations of BRCA1 & 2, and a ton of other things. it's $99. there are warnings all over that it's not meant to be used as a diagnostic tool, but it's cheap & might be of interest to you.

With my aunt (maternal) having been diagnosed with breast cancer this past month (she had her lumpectomy on Monday), my mom actually sat me down on Saturday and talked about me getting genetically tested as her drs recommended that my cousin get it done. My maternal grandmother had breast cancer twice, and my maternal great grandmother died from it. So at my next appointment, I'm going to talk about my risks and my aunt's current diagnosis to see what my dr thinks.
So this op-ed couldn't have come at a more poignant time in my life.
Kudos to Jolie. She definitely has people talking--although some of the comments on various new outlet facebook shares and the comments under her op-ed itself were...rude. So I really enjoyed Linda Holmes' response on NPR http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2013/05/14/183926927/yes-angelina-jolies-op-ed-matters 5/15/2013 9:39:00 AM

I think that it does a great deal for public awareness when a high profile celebrity comes out with their story. I think that it also tells women (young and old) that that you and your beauty is more than just your breasts. It's actually a great struggle for a young woman to deal with the thought of losing her breasts and ovaries -- the very things that make them a woman. For a woman who is prized for her beauty to publically come out and say that she chose her health over her breasts is a powerful thing. It doesn't make her special, but it is important that her story is told because so many will listen and some of those who listen need to hear her story. 5/15/2013 10:08:08 AM

yes people are, maybe not in this thread i haven't read it all but in general the whole fact that everyone in america is talking about it means that some % of people think this is special or something profound that she did

If you don't know this then your only beauty probably is your breasts because there's obviously not much going on in that brain of yours. Like how retarded are you and how little self confidence do you have?
