I keep thinking about George Carlin lately and how completely fucking caustic he became in his last couple years of life and it dawned on me that those were his least popular but most rewarding years.
He wasn't an entertaining activist who hit sensitive topics that we were aware of and had already reached conclusions on; He became a Problem.

From what I can tell, outside the vision of an "audience", he was just a regular 'nam vet with a few loyal friends he loved deeply and he just wanted to keep his subscription to Readers Digest current and minimize the number of dogs shitting on his lawn.

Did he intentionally become a problem for a popular culture that idolized his iconoclasm?
A problem that demanded a solution alien to his worshipers: Analysis and empathy?

I thought of Cosby as well. I feel he is similar in that in his age is he is also giving less of a fuck and instead of letting his listeners ponder his statements, he just comes right out and says "Look, dipshit, this is what I'm saying".

But Bill Cosby is still that lovable dad figure. He's still got that warm shoulder we can rest our weary heads on, but it's not free anymore. Instead of being the accepting father supporting his children (Americans), he's gotten pissed off that he raised a kid that still collectively lives in his basement and is perfectly content with living on leftovers pilfered from the upstairs fridge in the middle of the night.
