or fresh food in general
There are many restaurants that serve it but its extremely hard to find in the US unless you are in a big city. Part of the problem is that many menus advertise processed mozzarella as fresh mozzarella and when i go there i realize it.
In every other country its quite common.
Also wtf is pepperoni so common here and why does subway think its authentic Italian. What do we have against fresh, non processed foods?
Pepperoni is rare everywhere else. 5/17/2013 3:25:09 PM

Your assumptions seem horribly incorrect. People to want fresh food. Companies want profits. Though things may be changing, and it depends on location and scale, processed foods have historically been much cheaper, thus companies use them to maximize profits. 5/17/2013 3:27:26 PM

There's no way anybody dislikes fresh moz. With the exception of butter, it's like the most accessibly, viscerally delicious food in the store. 5/17/2013 3:32:36 PM

people in america might not know they like fresh mozzarella, or fresh food in general, as it is not served at mcdonald's or prominently displayed in the check out line at food lion

Its more of a rhetorical question in order for me to vent. I know americans have the industrialized food industry in order to use up all our corn and i know the goal of our country is more about making money than being healthy but still it seems like there would be a fater growing market for this.
A pizza place opened up a few years ago delivering with fresh mozz for like 12 bucks a pizza and they closed 2 years later. meanwhile our local pizza hut is going strong with fake pizzas for 20 bucks. 5/17/2013 3:56:43 PM

95% of the time when I want pizza I order from a local pizzeria not a chain, so I'm not part of that problem.

There's a place down the road from my house (The Veggie Wagon) that makes fresh mozzarella several times a week. They sell it in balls about the size of your fist. They shit is incredibly good. If you're ever in Carolina Beach you should visit them. 5/17/2013 4:23:38 PM

Its much more complicated to make processed mozzarella.
I wasn't born here but grew up here and loved fake food like everyone else. I always thought the US was the best and did everything the best way until i traveled and saw other places, met other people and ate other foods. Now I am so confused about the culture here. 5/17/2013 4:30:45 PM

The fact that you can buy it at every grocery store means
1. It is common 2. People eat it, a lot 3. I've been to plenty other countries that don't have anywhere near the food selection we have 5/17/2013 9:08:24 PM

also there is more processed mozzarella than fresh at every grocery store.

It seems like a lot of people prefer the processed, flavorless versions of foods because they're used to them, haven't ever been exposed to the fresh stuff, and refuse to try anything new. 5/20/2013 8:43:14 AM

Whenever I hesitate to try something new, it's because I'm feeling short on money/being frugal. If I only have so much to spend, I want to spend it on things that I know I will like. Frugal people may similarly limit themselves even if they're well off.
I mean, it can be pretty disconcerting to spend money on something that you end up hating, especially with food. Food is so critical for sustenance, comfort, sharing, etc... We depend on it in several different ways, and it's one of those things you really don't want to screw up.
Now, if the food is free, and you don't try a bite, then you're just a child. 5/20/2013 11:09:32 AM

I think social gatherings are the primary place where people tend to pass on free food, but I suspect a lot of people, like myself, don't get invited to a lot of those anyway. Plus, it's not like they typically include a bunch of new foods.
