Doesn't Birmingham have a historic hotel that Abe Lincoln and Stonewall Jackson stayed at or something?

I remember the commercials during ACC b-ball games last season. It really made me want to go to Birmingham so i could stay there.

I lived in the Dothan, Enterprise, Ft Rucker area... It s a whole different world down there. The only positive thing was I was just over an hour from panama city beach and destin. Otherwise, it was hotter than Tanzania and full of fat ugly people.

You sure you weren't in Madison, AL? It is a larger/less dense city right next to Huntsville that lots of people confuse WITH Huntsville. Madison is disgusting. Huntsville itself isn't that bad. Most of the people that live here aren't from Huntsville and aren't typical Alabamians. In fact, Huntsville has the second highest concentration of advanced college degrees in the country and is pretty much the birthplace of NASA. Lots of Indians and Asians who come to work for the government (Either NASA, Army, or one of the contractors). I think of Huntsville as a much smaller Raleigh but without a major universities. Drive 20 mins in any direction though and things start getting to what you expect Alabama to be like.

That being said I used to be just like that and figured Alabama was a hellhole of racism and ignorance. Then I moved here and have been living here for almost seven years and I don't really have too many complaints. And this is coming from someone who grew up in London, England which is pretty much the complete opposite of Alabama.

While I can't say much for the smaller towns because I didn't live there, Birmingham is the least racist city I have ever been in. The people I have seen in Mississippi and even Pensacola were more ignorant than those I met in Bham. I love that city and miss it. Oh, they also have AMAZING restaurants.

^^Interestingly enough Huntsville has a bunch of really good restaurants too... probably the best I've encountered in the USA. I attribute this mainly to the large ethnic population here (I really enjoy ethnic foods) and that Von Braun and his team brought a large European influence when they came in here after WWII.

And I guess to clarify, I meant that things definitely change when you cross from NC to TN. They are two very different states, and it's pretty obvious when you stop at your first gas station after crossing that border.
