race will be shutting down basically the entire stretch of the road making it a huge pain in the ass to make it through town.

You should clarify that this is Sunday.

Also closed next Saturday for the cancer walk, but not all day like the Ironman.

They need to cut this shit out, we close roads in the downtown area too often for races and walks. Use another part of Raleigh, this is way too much.

Ehh short races yeah but a yearly ironman is probably good for the town. Personally I don't find the downtown 5k scenery too interesting.. Hillsborough isn't that pretty to run though.

They did finally limit the number of races a year that could gum up downtown. Iirc they moved one of the Marathon courses because it shut down too much road.

^^^Why? it's the best place in the city if they're going to shut down roads. There's a million diff ways around downtown and you can easily walk anywhere from parking a few blocks away

So..I was looking this route and a bit confused. I have to get home from work around 9am. I see lake wheeler is on there...does this mean it's closed (specifically ten ten and lake wheeler). Or am I just going to have to stop for a bunch of damn bikes?....cuz I'll be less than thrilled going around my ass to get to my elbow....

Its not so much about getting down town its about getting between north south.

For instance if I want to make my run over to cameron village in the morning I would have to go all the way to the beltline or all the way downtown to actually make it across. They basically make what would be a 20 min round trip for me into an hour.

[Edited on June 1, 2013 at 2:30 PM. Reason : ^yeah looks like there practically bordering in 1/4 of the town.]

The issue with downtown is that there are so many, and its not the only place in Raleigh to have a run in Raleigh

Fuck this thing. I live a block off of Hillsborough St.

They do this shit like 10 times a year. Can't be great for commerce.

It's blocked all the way from Fuquay. I had to follow bikers partially down Lake Wheeler Rd until I turned off, only to run into a construction road block, then got caught in ANOTHER road block for the bikers. Took 2 hrs to go 45 minutes (from my hometown).

The internet (namely WRAL) says that Hillsbrough St will only be blocked off "from Salisbury Street to Meredith College from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m."
Does anyone know if that's accurate/Hillsborough St is clear/accessible?

yeah, they said they expected to get 2-3 million out of this thing. That's pretty darn good. I will say, it took me about 30 minutes to get to the beltline from downtown around flying saucer area this afternoon.

From what I've seen (wral, facebook), shop owners are actually really pissed off, as no one that otherwise might have went to their businesses earlier today...

The comments on here: http://www.wral.com/triathlon-to-bring-athletes-money-traffic-headaches/12499927/
There are mixed opinions, but apparently a lot of people didn't know this ahead of time.

Quote :
"While i do applaud that they are donating some of the money, this is a for profit event. My business is in the path of this "traffic headache" on Hillsborough st. It says Hillsborough street from Beryl on down will be closed...which means I would not be able to get customers to my business. They are however (as told by someone at the city of Raleigh) going to have one lane open from Beryl to Gorman open and people will have to turn right on Gorman. These events bring me no new customers, once their race is over they leave town, the only time they come any where near my business is during the race and most of it will be blocked off. While the hotel and restaurants will get a pickup from this event, a lot of other places will be left with no customers. Having to close down and send employees home with no pay is not a benefit."

Quote :
"I work at the Raleigh Farmer's Market and this event is going to cost the market vendors thousands of dollars. With Lake Wheeler road being closed on Sunday(our 2nd busiest day of the week) from 9 until 2 our customers will only be able to access the market by way of Gorman Street. I seriously doubt many will follow the signs (if there are signs) to the market. We have a small window of opportunity to sell our products and losing our Sunday income hurts."

I imagine hotels are the only ones really making money off an event like this, probably hurts most everyone else aside from a few convenient restaurants.

We did below average sales at my shop today, but way above average yesterday. Whether more people came out Saturday because they knew today would be a cluster, I don't know. I do know that two shops on my block that are normally open Sundays were closed for the race.
