I got this email this afternoon:

Title: Various and Sundry Leaks in the Building from Tropical Storm Andrea
From: *Department Administrator*

4:18 PM (1 minute ago)

Hi everyone. Facilities is swamped with calls about leaks, pools of water, etc., from Tropical Storm Andrea, and *Building Maintenance Person* and the Main Office are aware of certain areas that are already leaking.

Since it is unlikely they will be able to reach all these areas as quickly as we would hope, please be proactive and go ahead and use your Recycle Bins, coolers, etc. to catch any leaks you find in your offices or labs. Most leaks have been coming from the roof and pooling in the tiles or coming down the window frames. Please check those areas.

If you have plastic, please cover any papers or equipment you deem important since Andrea decided to hit on a weekend...

Thank you and good luck...

*Department Administrator*

They keep turning the water off and on in our building because they are trying to fix something. I basically have to check my email before I go to take a dump or fill my water bottle

Damn Republicans. If they hadn't cut the budget, all of these problems would not exist.

Before the cuts, there were 650 maintenance men on staff to fix all leaks simultaneously and instantaneously.

Slow reaction time to water issues dads to mold which leads to health issues which leads to a lot more money than they tried to save during the budget cut.

That email sounds like my old work building every time a storm came through.

I'm a private employee, not public.

I've had shit like this both in the private and public sectors.

During my time working for a school district, we had neighboring school districts competing for a new building by basically showing how shitty theirs were. Meanwhile the building I was working in was far older, and next on the replacement list, but we were getting screwed because we actually budgeted for repairs to facilities, rather than just letting it rot until we got a new building.

And to be honest, budgeting for building upkeep is not a high priority in state government in general. Even prior to the budget cuts in the last few years, it seems that the University system was bad about building fancy new buildings and then not maintaining them. Most of my buildings had very fancy systems that they could not afford to upkeep. Big ass TV displays, fancy fiber optic lighting, etc. Shit one of the buildings I frequently use has had a revolving door (manual, not automatic) that hasn't worked since it was installed. And nobody is in a hurry to spend the money to fix it, so we have to use a little standard door on the side instead to go in and out. But it sure looks fancy there.
