Yeah, it was the Mujahideen who beat the Soviets. The Taliban were a splinter group that came to eclipse them and took control of the country, sending it back to the Middle Ages in a way that made the Mujahideen look like the Free Love movement.
But yeah, fact remains, Afghanistan is more or less inconquerable except by Afghans themselves.

The United States does not negotiate with terrorists; we give them an embassy and say "peace out". Unless, of course, they never were terrorists to begin with. Actually, they are pretty swell guys. We should hang out more often. 6/20/2013 2:41:35 PM |

I guess I completely misinterpreted who won the US civil war because I know for a fact that the confederate flag still is raised in some places. 6/20/2013 2:50:01 PM |

The taliban did not defeat the US just as the mujahideen did not defeat the Soviets. Defeat is what Afghans did to the Britts when they reduced an army of 30,000 to a single doctor on a horse. What the muj and talibs did was NOT lose. It's the cornerstone of insurgency and asymmetric warfare. You know you can't win, so you just try and keep the game going till you'r superior opponent runs out of will, treasure and patience and leaves. It's worked consistently throughout history, George Washington used it in the American Revolution.
Early in the war a taliban commander was asked by a reporter to respond to and American General who had vowed to annihilate them. His response: "You have all the watches, we have all the time" 6/21/2013 4:57:02 PM |

The part about the colonial army being an insurgency that was just trying to wait out the British. We may have used some guerrilla tactics, but we also met the enemy face to face on the battlefield in conventional warfare. Our tactics were ultimately aimed at surrender of the British, as Yorktown shows. 6/22/2013 11:42:37 PM |

Ah, I see. What I was saying was that Washington used asymmetric warfare TTPs. Insurgency is a form of asymmetric warfare, but not what I meant in regards to the American Revolution. Asymmetric warfare can be used by conventional forces, often to supplement symmetrical tactics. They are not mutually exclusive. Keep in mind that the Continental army was defeated most of the time when they went head to head with the British. Asymmetric warfare was one of many tactics used by the Americans to put them in a position to ultimately defeat the British conventionally.
To sum up, I was saying that asymmetry was part of the overall strategy, but by no means the total strategic plan. 6/23/2013 3:05:03 PM |
