http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Browning

Quote :
"Browning is probably best remembered today as the inspiration behind the Hillerich & Bradsby company's popular "Louisville Slugger" line of baseball bats. He was the first player to purchase a bat from the company, and they adopted the name a few years later to honor his patronage and capitalize on his fame"

Quote :
"Playing in spite of serious medical afflictions which rendered him virtually deaf and subjected him to massive headaches, he resorted to alcohol to subdue the pain, but continued to hit well even as his drinking increased"

a man's man

Quote :
"Browning was a man of eccentric personal habits, particularly in relation to his bats. He spoke to them, and gave each one a name, often that of a Biblical figure. In the belief that any individual bat contained only a certain number of hits, he would periodically "retire" bats, keeping vast numbers of the retired ones in the home he shared with his mother. These bats were 37 inches long and 48 ounces in weight, enormous even by the standards of the time. He also habitually stared at the sun, thinking that by doing so, he would strengthen his eyes. He also "cleansed" his eyes when travelling by train by sticking his head out the window in an effort to catch cinders in them. Browning also computed his average on his cuffs on a regular basis, and was not above announcing to all when his train arrived at a depot that he was the champion batter of the American Association."

TIL,

The USSR launched 30 satellites with nuclear reactors. Because it was dangerous to drop them down to Earth, they raised their orbit. So they'll stay up there for 400-600 years. Together they have over 500 kg of highly enriched Uranium.

That's not in Wikipedia, but I posted it anyway.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Karachay

Quote :
"Lake Karachay, located in the southern Ural Mountains in eastern Russia, was a dumping ground for the Soviet Union's nuclear weapon facilities. It was also affected by a string of accidents and disasters causing the surrounding areas to be highly contaminated with radioactive waste. Washington, D.C.-based Worldwatch Institute has described it as the "most polluted spot on Earth." It is claimed that spending even five minutes at the shore of the lake is enough to receive a deadly dose of radiation"

Sounds like a nice place for a refreshing under 5 min swim... just might be a bit cold, though.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raleigh_Speedway

Quote :
"Jocko Flocko, Tim Flock's pet monkey, accompanied the racer in-car for the final time at the 1953 Grand National race. Somehow Jocko got loose from his seat harness and began exploring the race car. He found a string that lifted a trap door where the driver could check the condition of the right-front tire. As Jocko opened the door, a pebble flew up and struck him in the head. The monkey went berserk and Tim, who was leading the race at the time, had to pit to have the crazed primate removed from the car. Tim finished third as a result."
