Recently bought sparklers, only to be grossly disappointed by how much they suck compared to the ones I grew up with. The ones we found today look almost like tiny flamethrowers with about as many sparks as I would get if I was striking flint and iron. The ones I remember, and also some we used several years ago, shot out a circular array of sparks all the way down. I also remember some really good ones from years ago that show the circular array of sparks along with several "stars" or "balls" that fell from the tip that you could "feel" but weren't hot when they hit.

I heard about "Morning Glory" sparklers, but after some YouTube videos realized ones marketed under this name are still not necessarily the type of sparklers I'm after. The good ones I remember looked like really thick incense sticks, not this colored paper crap. Can anyone give me some good brand recommendations to look for (pictures of the box appreciated too) so I can find sparklers worthy of the name?

No, like most of the posters in this forum, I happen to have a child, and would rather her not use something that can burn her (the morning glory sparklers we have are actually hotter than the ones I played with) and a lot more boring. Also, since getting any real fireworks are impossible unless I drive to SC again (and because that is freaking expensive every time we do that), I would rather just find some fun, legal "fireworks" that I can get here that are worth the cash.

it's a sparkler. your child won't know the difference, and will enjoy it regardless. If he/she doesn't enjoy the sparkler, then you've just found out your kid has outgrown this stupid shit.

Your child will know the difference between a sparkler and a road flare. One will burn their lungs and melt straight through their hand, and it's up to them to find out which one. Some children may need adult help to strike the flare though. That part can be tricky.

You can use road flares to torture somebody (sparklers too, I'd imagine.) When some luckless SOB ran over John Gotti's son, they kidnapped him, took him to a warehouse and stuck road flares up his ass.

Just wanted to share this interesting story
