Looks like the back tail-section of the plane clipped a stone barrier dividing the runway and a body of water. Per Wikipedia the planes average 314 to 451 passengers.

I'm at SFO now, waiting on flight back to CLT. Perfect vantage of the fire from our gate. All flights cancelled, had to rebook for a red eye flight tonight. Fun with a 10month old! ?? Small inconvenience though compared to those on board, so not complaining.

I understand it was trying to be funny, but it wasn't successful. Even if it was, still not classy. Google the word "classy".

This is clearly a test run of a super-secret gov't weapon for taking down aircraft in flight. It's obvious a laser weapon of some kind vaporized one of the engines during landing maneuvers. They are probably going to use this on whatever plane Snowden gets on to kill him

Surprised nobody in this thread has mentioned the fact that it's an Asian Airline or made any racist comments about Asians not knowing how to drive/fly yet...

Early reports said the plane was coming in at an awkward angle, so it may have been a cross wind landing gone bad. That sucks.

777 is an impeccable plane. Hard for me to believe this could've anything other than pilot error, bad crosswinds, or possibly a bird strike just before crossing the threshold. All it would take is a drop of 50 feet or so to nail that jetty.

of course it was crosswinds. ask emce, duke or wraith what the AD cross section of these beasts is.
They shouldn't be allowed in the fucking sky but for their ability to fly in zero aero lift like a rocket

Asiana Airlines doesn't have a particularly good track record and this certainly doesn't help their cause...

Was it Outliers that had a whole chapter on how Koreans are bad pilots?

On a basis of culture and power differential in conversation for Koreans does not allow them to effectively communicate critical information efficiently enough. Ones from the US are just like all other US pilots.

From everything I've seen/read, they have a relatively unblemished record in comparison to other airlines.

Looks exactly like what was stated earlier. Without ILS assisted landing, the pilot flying it in manually came in too low, tried to pull up and had a tailstrike on the seawall. Crazy to see that it DID actually do a half somersault with the whole rear of the plane spinning around and half rising in the air. Damn near looks like it was trying to flip over. If that had happened, the death count would have probably been a LOT higher.

I was wondering when an eyewitness video would surface. Seems like everything is caught on video these days.

I bet he didn't expect to film something like that!

Compared to Korean Air, you're absolutely right...after reading Korean Air's incident history:

Yea... looks like the guy just got low and slow, "Drug in" and shorted it. Also factor in that he may not have recognized it early enough to get the engines spooled up to go around. I can't see anything about crosswinds from the video. (not that you can really see much from the video anyway)
