Anyone have experience with this. Were ttrying to rent one for ten days in the bayarea and have no idea where to statt or what to look out for

Not needed for the smaller, truck/van based, <10k lbs

^ This. If it doesn't have air brakes you're probably ok with a standard drivers license. That was the distinction on the box trucks I used to drive at least.

i don't think air brakes has anything to do with it. you're not likely to need a commercial driver's license for any non-commercial vehicle. NC requires a class A or B non-commericial if the GVWR is over 26k.

It basically comes down to axles and weight. The box truck-based RVs don't require a CDL, but the bus-type ones usually do.

It's pretty expensive. I've been trying to do it for the August time frame and can't find anything less than $129/day with crazy mileage restriction. Smaller RV dealers seem to have a few better deals on craigslist.
