World Market house brand/sale wine frequently goes for $2.95-$4.95. I have no problem stocking my wine racks with those for non-special occasions. 7/10/2013 6:52:23 PM

I can't drink the 2 Buck Chuck, but I've some tasty Vinho Verde from Trader Joe's that I think is $4.99 a bottle...shit, it might even be $3.99.
I normally don't go over $10 or $11 a bottle when buying retail. I load up at Trader Joe's on Sundays on our way back from the beach and my purchases range from $5 to $8 a bottle. I've had pretty much everything there and know what's good and drinkable. I do have a couple "fancy" bottles that I save at the house for special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, settling big cases) that range from $20 to $50 retail. I'd say we go through about 10 of those a year.

Truth. The brand is Espiral. We usually buy 5 or so bottles when we go to TJ because a bottle doesn't last more than one night. Fantastic stuff for the price. (Their Vinho Rose is also really good if you haven't had it. Pink, yes, but dry.)
Outside of TJ's, I usually don't go below Barefoot/Rex Goliath. So generally the $6 mark. 7/10/2013 10:38:55 PM

i really enjoy three-buck chuck shiraz...is there better wine out there and can i tell the difference? yes on both accounts. but some cheap wine ($3-6) is very drinkable and given that my wife and i drink a glass or two almost every night that we're at home, we save the good stuff for when friends are over or we've made a nice dinner or something 7/11/2013 8:20:46 AM

2 buck chuck here. And:
Quote : | "Wine tasting is bullshit. Here's why
The human palate is arguably the weakest of the five traditional senses. This begs an important question regarding wine tasting: is it bullshit, or is it complete and utter bullshit?
There are no two ways about it: the bullshit is strong with wine. Wine tasting. Wine rating. Wine reviews. Wine descriptions. They're all related. And they're all egregious offenders, from a bullshit standpoint. Exhibit A: Wine experts contradict themselves. Constantly.
Statistician and wine-lover Robert Hodgson recently analyzed a series of wine competitions in California, after "wondering how wines, such as his own, [could] win a gold medal at one competition, and 'end up in the pooper' at others." In one study, Hodgson presented blindfolded wine experts with the same wine three times in succession. Incredibly, the judges' ratings typically varied by ±4 points on a standard ratings scale running from 80 to 100...." |

Its bullshit to a certain extent. And wines do taste different. I can drink cheap wines, but 2 buck chuck still tastes like shit to me. But I also had a $15 bottle (retail) that tasted like shit (to me) the other week.
I've just had more cheaper wines taste like shit than more expensive wines. And I drink a ton of $5 and $6 wines from Trader Joes...so I'm not not picky.
And if you've ever seen someone go through their sommelier tests and training...then you definitely know its not bullshit. I've got a friend who is an assistant sommelier down here in Charleston and his blindfold tasting test blew my fucking mind. 7/11/2013 9:34:49 AM

i do not believe there's a wine on this planet worth more than $50/bottle...i had some AMAZING wines in sonoma that were (comparatively) expensive at ~$40-45 that we bought because they were absolutely fantastic and we figured we'd save them for an anniversary or something
but how much better can it be? not better enough to be worth $50+...maybe it's because my palate is "bad" or i haven't been properly "trained" to enjoy wine, but i'm 100% okay with that
i can enjoy a three-buck chuck for what it is, just like i can enjoy a corona for what it is...nothing spectacular, but drinkable and enjoyable as long as you're not trying to turn it into an experience
also, an aerating pourer (http://www.amazon.com/True-Fabrications-Wine-Aerating-Spout/dp/B0027HV9TU/) and vacu vin (http://www.amazon.com/Vacu-Vin-0981450-Vacuum-Stoppers/dp/B000GA3KCE/) are easily worth the combined $20 investment...aerated wine ALWAYS tastes different (neither good nor bad, necessarily, just different) and arguably makes "cheap" wine taste better by mellowing the alcohol...sucking the air out of an opened bottle definitely makes it last longer in it's "just opened" state by minimizing oxidation...there's obviously a point between just opened and "sat out too long" in regards to oxidation/aeration, though 7/11/2013 9:53:59 AM
