I have a huge bag of trail mix and I want to take some on the plane. I know you can't get outside drinks past security, but what about food -- particularly food in an unsealed bag?

Tired of spending $7 for a 3oz bag of snacks at the airport gift shop. As many times as I've flown, it's never dawned on me until now

you could try the worst that happens is they take it away. I think I've seen moms bring on cheerios and stuff for their obnoxious crotch fruit to eat so they stfu on the plane

I always get by security with giant metal knitting needles no problem so if you can't get by with trail mix, I'm going to probably laugh

I'm pretty sure food is not a problem. The issue with the drinks is that they are paranoid that the liquid is actually ingredients for some sort of fire/explosive device.

put them in your carry on bag & just send the bag through the xray machine like normal

either they say nothing & you get your food or they take the food out & send the bag through again

I always bring my own food if im flying for a while. Just last week I brought a gyro with me (which I ate at the airport during a layover). Never had a problem, except maybe with security saying they wanted to eat it.

For future inquiries, I suggest you visit http://www.tsa.gov. On the front page it says "When I fly, can I bring my...?" Just type in what your bringing and it gives you the answer.

For example, I typed in nuts, then chose bagged nuts. It gave the following information:

"Solid food items (not liquids or gels) can be transported in either your carry-on or checked baggage. Liquid or gel food items larger than 3.4 oz are not permitted in carry-on baggage and should be placed in your checked baggage if possible. All food products should be properly packaged to avoid spilling during the screening process and damaging security equipment and other passengers' belongings. Cakes and pies are permitted as carry-on items, but could require additional screening."

I take snacks with me on every flight I take, mainly because I always tend to fly during meal times. Plus, if I get delayed I won't have to buy expensive airport snacks.

I also take an empty Nalgene so I can fill it will water fountain water (or free ice water from a restaurant). It goes through security fine but has to be empty.

For vacation or late night flights, I put vodka/rum nips in my quart-size liquids bag and enjoy boozing it up on the plane (while not paying $7+ a piece). Most airlines provide cokes, cranberry, etc for free during the flight.
