I know he was there 2000-01, not sure if he was there the previous or following years since he moved around all the time 7/25/2013 11:06:26 PM

Quote : | "Tuesday morning he walked across the street from the high rise he lived in to buy some food at the little local convenience store. He was full of alcohol . . . and starving at about 6am. He went to the back of the store and picked up some of the cooked chicken they have there, and then grabbed up a couple of pieces of the raw pot roast meat they had packaged, and evidently put one of the pieces of meat in his mouth on the way to the register. He got there to check out only to find out he had left his wallet at home . . . the check-out person viewed his unshaven face, and his choking gestures, and his lack of money as evidence that he was just a homeless dude, drunk, and kind of acting weird. Kevin walked out the door into the street, to try and clear his throat, sat on the curb . . . " |

True.
I watched an intense In The Heat Of The Night episode this week where Bubba's nephew could only paint well if he was on crack.

there are a significant number of past drug/alcohol users that are still alive way past that

most of them aren't creating good art, though. it's a rare artist who can produce quality shit past the age of 35. (though admittedly this might just be one of those random lightly-supported facts that I pull out of my ass sometimes.)
maybe that's the meaning of "it's better to burn out than fade away." you might as well kill yourself with drugs and liquor before you decline into sober, boring, talentless mediocrity.] 7/26/2013 1:36:16 AM

yeah, but a lot of folks do lose it as the get older..the list you quoted could still be part of a minority.
just look at all the bands/musical artists that used to be pretty good, then got old and started to suck. Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, AC/DC, the Who, Eric Clapton...that's off the top of my head (old musicians who are still making music), but these are all very prominent names who did 80-100% of their best work before they were 35. Maybe 35 is a bit early, but as a general rule artists lose some of their spark as they grow older.
As I'm not a fan of Faulkner in general, so I can't judge him too soundly, but I do seem to recall reading some critic remarking that in his later years his work grew "overburned with allegory, a shadow of its former self." (And some random critic whose name I don't even know said it, so it must be true.) And Bob Dylan hasn't written anything (to my knowledge) in the last 30 years that can compete with his best stuff.

well anyway, musical taste differences aside, I posted some of his songs that he had sent me and some of my classmates on my YouTube channel:
(dat 128 mp3 )
folk-(ish) music with acoustic guitar, and occasionally backup singers - amateur material but fun to listen to
not sure if playlists can be embedded, so if this embed I'm gonna try doesn't work, you can just visit my channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/bubblebobblemusic - and it's the playlist with his name in it
gonna try the embed code, but am too lazy to edit if it doesn't work (cause ain't nobody got time fuh dat)
well, 1 edit - the embedded playlist here is playing them out of order from how I arranged them
(ok fine, 2 edits) :3
but whatever
enjoy, folks ] 7/26/2013 6:01:15 PM

I learned about that in about maybe... 2008?
ever since then I've just kinda viewed it as so absurd that it looks like he faked his own death
like, just to achieve some small level of infamy
but I guess it's the 21st century
absurdity abounds, and knowing that he was from Alabama, I guess that actually is starting to make sense
so weird though..
he seemed like a really cool guy
his music was funny and he was infinitely clever
his writing was too abrasive/over-the-top for me (personally, not suggesting that you don't read it or anything) - lots of cursing and sexual stuff that I'm not really into
idk
he just seems worth remembering, especially since he went out on such a sour note 7/27/2013 3:35:19 PM
