http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-24/no-menstrual-hygiene-for-indian-women-holds-economy-back.html
a very good read
it's like, another fucking planet there
Quote : | "For Sushma and many others in India, puberty didn’t just mark the process of becoming a woman. It brought a source of humiliation and an obstacle to learning." |
Quote : | "Of the 355 million reproductive-age women in India, only 12 percent use absorbent pads or another sanitary method to stem the blood flow during their periods, a report by AC Nielsen and Plan India found in 2010. The rest tend to rely on old fabric, husks, dried leaves and grass, ash, sand or newspapers." |
Quote : | "At least one in five girls drop out when periods begin, according to research by AC Nielsen and Plan India, a New Delhi-based non-profit organization. Those who persist typically miss five days of school each month due to inadequate menstrual protection." |
Quote : | "Menstruating women can’t perform religious rituals, touch idols, pray, visit temples, cook, serve food and touch drinking water in many traditional Hindu homes because they’re considered impure." |
Quote : | "A few households in rural Uttar Pradesh, the state just west of Bihar, have a separate area for menstruating women to sleep, according to a report from Unicef." |
Quote : | "Sushma isn’t ready to ditch the taboos she grew up with. While she says she will discuss these issues with other women, and has showed them her cup, she goes out of her way to keep her husband and sons in the dark.
“We absolutely don’t talk about it with men,” she says, protectively cupping the head of her 6-year-old son. “It is dirty. Why should they know about it?”" |

sadly, just goes to show how religion is such a strong force in poor countries.
religion says Ganges water is holy... so you have people drinking from it and bathing in it, even though the water looks like choc milk.
religion says a menstruating woman is impure and shouldn't touch anything... and boom, people follow it.

This nearly brought tears to my eyes... what an amazing selfless dude, trying to improve the lives of hundreds of millions, AND not after profit or a luxurious life.
Probably under a 100 people like that in the world. If anybody deserves to go to heaven, it is him. My hats off to him.
BTW, video is just as hilarious and and as it is inspiring and touching. Worth 12 minutes of your life.

^ make it a part of the religion, and everybody will follow it... shouldn't be too difficult in a religion which already has a penis god.
Make it "Worship The Penis God Week", and you re good to go.

Hey "rags off their heads" guy, first, only Sikhs wear the dastar, and then it's all men; turbans are not worn by any other major ethnoreligious group in India (they are worn by Muslims, but only between Iran and Arabia IIRC), and at any rate it's offensive to ask people to defile their religious vestments for lack of Western-style toiletries.
It's like asking why the Roman Catholic priests of old didn't wipe out the chamber pots, and the asses of those who used them, with their robes. 11/13/2013 6:32:18 AM

You can worship whatever 8 armed elephant you want to, but a lack of personal hygiene... its like they declared a holy war on my nose. My Jesus worshiping doesn't pollute the air. They should have to wear hazmat suits. 11/13/2013 12:30:55 PM

some interesting solutions going on with this issue. for one thing, there is a start-up selling fem prods from women to women. its better than having to go into a male-operated pharmacy. 11/13/2013 12:53:44 PM

I have always thought it interesting that some Indian people even in the Western world don't wear any form of deodorant. One extremely pungent college student was on the bus yesterday and even though he sat almost at the back of bus while I was at the front, I could smell him throughout the ride. It was pretty fucking bad, especially for just one dude.
Still say my worst bus riding experience was catching the late afternoon bus to Centennial to get off at AFC. Bus was standing room only with Indian guys and was the most pungent thing I have "experienced". 11/13/2013 1:05:23 PM

I saw another pad startup a few months ago that was going to produce and distribute them for $0.40 each. Seems really high. The 'name brand' can be had for less than $0.20 here, in large packages. 11/13/2013 2:12:01 PM

0.40 is way too much for people living on less than $2 a day. An acceptable price for Indian women deep inside India would be 0.05 or less. 11/13/2013 3:11:25 PM

^^ if that was some kind of dig at me, it doesn't bother me.
I agree with your premise that it is another planet, I know all about it. To be fair, though, the country doesn't think that, rather, one stupid cleric, who I must mention, has been thoroughly ridiculed by his own people all over social media. On the flip side, I am sure there are also thousands like him who blindly believe him. 11/13/2013 4:05:27 PM

I don't know, I haven't been there since 1986, and I haven't read anything in the news regarding that issue there. If I were to guess, the answer would be definitely a yes. Similar poverty levels and a shitty male dominated society, plus similar stupid taboos surrounding women. Although I must say, in Islam, there is nothing about a menstruating woman not allowed to cook food or touch family members, only thing she is not allowed to do is perform religious duties, but there is no bar on social or family duties or activities. But then again, cultural forces are stronger than true religious teachings in that part of the world, and many of the things reported on the news coming from there that outsiders think are part of religion, are actually part of culture. 1/21/2014 11:08:28 AM
