First, as originally posted in the 2007 thread, Flying Turns - Knoebels - Elysburg, PA



It would seem that after seven years the Flying Turns is finally really actually happening. A successful train has been tested, state inspectors have presumably signed off on the ride, and it might even open in the next month or two before the 2013 season ends. It will be the first ride of its kind since 1941.

Goliath - Six Flags Great America - Chicago, IL





Following in the footsteps of the ridiculous Outlaw Run in Missouri, Goliath will be the third modern wooden coaster to go upside down, as well as the fastest wooden coaster in the world with the tallest and steepest drop.

Banshee - Kings Island - Cincinnati, OH





Banshee will be the world's longest inverted coaster, using the terrain so that the fastest point of the ride comes about halfway through.

Medusa Steel Coaster - Six Flags Mexico - Mexico City



As with Texas Giant and Rattler, Rocky Mountain Construction will be taking a wooden coaster that has seen better days and re imagining it with steel track. The new iteration of Medusa will include three inversions.

Firechaser Express - Dollywood - Pigeon Forge, TN



Announced as part of a $300 million expansion over the next 10 years (including a resort), Firechaser Express is a family coaster but should prove to be one of the more unique rides in the country. It will have two launches, one forwards and one backwards, and an indoor section. Not many details have been released.


Helix - Liseberg - Gothenburg, Sweden



Maybe a candidate for best ride of 2014, Helix is a 4,500 foot long coaster with two launches, seven inversions, and four airtime hills.

Thunderbolt - Luna Park - Brooklyn, NY



Though it is named after the legendary Coney Island Thunderbolt, and will be built on the same spot, that is where the similarities end. The new Thunderbolt will be steel, featuring a beyond vertical first drop, three inversions, and some airtime hills.

Unknown - Heide Park - Soltau, Germany




Heide Park is building the 7th B&M wing coaster, and looking at the rendering this one may make better use of the wing concept than the previous 6. Looks very creative.

When you say coasters of 20xx, do you mean coasters that have been built in that year (or the year before)? Or does it just refer to coasters *you* plan on visiting that particular year? Just curious, not arguing.

Maybe you should also post the worlds fastest and quickest coaster, the Ferrari coaster in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Any plans on ever going there?

that "flying turns" looks very similar in design to the "Avalanche" at King's Dominion (other than the construction material)

I think the major difference (other than one being wood and one being steel) is that Avalanche is much more spread out and controlled, whereas Flying Turns is extremely compact and appears (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYpESRchMPU) to deliver a much more out-of-control feeling ride.

The Intimidator at KD is great. If you sit in the last row you black out from the G forces. I've never done crack, but I'm guessing the feeling is pretty similar

The guy that runs TPR (Robb Alvey) has been on something like 1500 coasters. If you've ever seen a roller coaster show on the Travel Channel, you've most likely seen him or his wife being interviewed. He's also a huge douche bag.

if you enjoy roller coasters like I did don't start riding sportbikes. as cool as roller coasters were, I just can't get into them because they're comparatively slow I miss the hell outta scarowinds and chillin at busch gardens all day.

I must ask though, how are roller coasters while under the influence (drunk or otherwise)? I haven't been on one since I was old enough to drink.

Amazing. For some reason my tolerance for riding coasters over and over shoots up considerably when I'm drunk (which is the opposite of what I would have expected).

Cat is somewhat out of the bag. The Charlotte Observer reported this morning that the coaster will be over 300 feet tall. We're almost certainly looking at Leviathan 2.0 (which I have no problem with because I just went to Canada's Wonderland over the weekend and both those B&Ms were amazing).

Hadn't seen that yet. That sounds awesome. But what's with Cedar Fair installing a B&M hyper coaster and then coming right back and building a bigger version of the same type of coaster in both parks? Behemoth and Leviathan both look pretty awesome, but are the ride experiences that different? Just seems like a weird thing to do with Intimidator there already.

I think there are a few reasons behind it. The ride experiences are actually fairly different for one. I thought they complemented each other pretty well. The other is that the average park guest doesn't know anything about ride manufacturers and ride styles and isn't even going to pick up on the fact that these are similar coasters. To them it's just another giant terrifying roller coaster. From the park's perspective, B&Ms are great. They are so reliable and easy to work with. I know with Canada's Wonderland that park gets insanely crowded pretty much every day, so they really wanted another ride that would move an enormous amount of people through. The B&M hypers do that better than just about anything. I waited in a completely full queue for Leviathan and it was a little over 30 minutes.

Yep. It was a lot of fun. I wish it was longer, but there's definitely nothing quite like it. Down side was we waited an hour and a half in the morning and an hour at night. They weigh everyone before you board to ensure the right balance.

Construction actually only took a little more than a year. They started building it in January 2006 and the ride actually tested for the first time in July 2007 without the lift or anything installed. By the end of 2007 they had installed all of the motors and tested it with the full 5 car train. At that point I think everyone expected it to open in 2008. I'm not 100% sure what the issue was, but my understanding is that modern safety regulations are many times more onerous than they were when the last ride of this type was built (around 70 years ago). I think it just didn't give a consistent enough ride for the park to be comfortable with it (allegedly it would fishtail pretty violently sometimes when they were testing it). Supposedly when they originally decided they wanted to do a modern flying turns they went to Mack Rides (manufacturer of most of the modern day steel bobsled coasters) and Mack said that a modern wooden one could not be done.

They retracked the ride completely and manufactured brand new trains for 2009 and once again were unsuccessful. Same in 2010. I'm not sure how many different train iterations they went through, but it was more than two for sure.

I was told (and I have no idea if it's true) that Dick Knoebel had basically decided to give up on the project and scrap the ride, but Mike Boodley (formerly of wood coaster company Great Coasters International) asked him to let him take a shot at it. He figured it out apparently, because the train operating today was his design. The current trains only have 3 cars so I suspect it is not the capacity that they had hoped for.

Started the season yesterday with a trip to Busch Gardens Tampa. It's been a while since I've been there, but it was awesome as always. Montu is great, and Kumba is still one of my all-time favorites anywhere. Re-rides were happening all day since the park was mostly empty. Meanwhile, my one ride on Gwazi felt like:




Looking like this summer could be a big one. I'm driving to NC in a couple weeks and I should be stopping at Magic Kingdom and possibly Epcot for a day on my way through. Hopefully the new mine coaster will be open. I will definitely be hitting up Dollywood to try Firechaser and Wild Eagle in July after promising myself I'd get there the last couple of seasons. I also think a trip to Chicago for Goliath will be possible now that I have a friend who lives there. May make a week of it and throw in Cedar Point, King's Island (Banshee looks pretty great) and possibly Holiday World too.

I've got Knoebels tomorrow for my first rides of the year. First big trip will be Kentucky Kingdom, Holiday World, and Kings Island next month. Need to bike down to Coney Island sometime to check out Thunderbolt construction. Apparently steel is finally going up.

So Lightning Run is stupidly good. One of the best steel coasters I've ever been on. Small footprint and only cost $7 million. These need to start popping up everywhere.

Banshee was good but I don't really get all the hype. Off the top of my head I like Nemesis, Montu, Raptor, Afterburn, and maybe even Alpengeist better.

Voyage was giving the best rides I've ever had on it (also went in 2006 and 2010). Just unbelievable. They are teasing the 2015 coaster. Lots of land clearing going on back in the woods near Voyage where it appears the new ride will cross over or under it. They gave the event attendees 4 drink coasters (Voyage, Raven, Legend, and 2015 teaser) and a magnet on the way out, which I suspect was not a coincidence. Launched steel back in the woods?

1. Busch Gardens (3 hours)
2. Dollywood (6 hours)
3. Kings Dominion (3 hours)
4. Carowinds (3 hours, wait until next year when they build one of the world's tallest coasters)
5. Six Flags America (5 hours, this park kind of sucks)

I think it's just the first invert from B&M in a while and people are excited to see the style rejuvenated with some unique elements. I'd certainly like to see more being built in the US. I've never been to Alton Towers, but of the others you listed I'd go Montu, Afterburn, Alpengeist (the back half kills a pretty good first half) and Raptor in that order.
