I have not been fishing in years, so basically I need to you to tell me what to buy (just reel and some tackle) for $100-150. I can do fly fishing or just regular reel. I am not looking for the best stuff in the work, just some decent quality equipment that I can get a reasonable useful life out of it.

This. But I will say that I have a "utility" rod/reel combo that I can use for pretty much any kind of freshwater fishing. I keep it in my car in the event I run up on a random pond during the day.

If you mean fishing license, of course. And I wouldn't just randomly fish on someone's private property, I'd only stop if someone else was out there. There are a few ponds like this in the Alamance / Snow Camp area. One is at a church, and it's a really fun little fishin' hole. Tons of bass, nothing huge, but tons of them in the 1-2lb range.

For an all purpose combo and speaking from personal experience, I would suggest a Shimano Stella SW20000 on a Black Hole Cape Cod Special Spinning Rod. You could land Brim and Bluefin with this combo!

Freshwater fish (lake, river), and I want to fish for a variety like catfish, bass, brim, etc...

That is a huge variety and will take all different sizes of hooks and bait.

You need to decide if you want to fish for panfish or for the larger like bass and catfish.

The best thing you can do is go and get one of those combo lure/hook/weight trays at wally world or dicks sporting goods.

as for a rod/reel...some medium action rod(I always have liked Shakespeare myself) and spin cast reel should do you just fine.

Stella is a pretty bad suggestion, considering it's $800-1000 and this dude is looking for a rod & reel combo in the $100-150 range

How is restricted's advice both great advice and bad advice? Is that rod/reel really that expensive?

This thread is relevant to my interests but I'm also only willing to pay $100-$150.

this is right up BigHitSunday's alley. he could offer some good advice.

but it really sounds like all you need is a decent rod/reel combo and a tackle kit that someone has already mentioned. let's be honest, you're probably going to do this two-three times before it sits in your closet for the next 2 years. so don't go blow a bunch of money.

I have a really nice bait caster at the lake, but 9 times out of 10 i just get out one of the handful of shakespeare spinning combos that we have and toss on a live bait and bobber. and i've caught everything you've mentioned off my dock from ounces to 12+lbs.

bro just get a lil ugly stick and a shakespeare spinner. throw flashy little lures for the smaller fish, the brim and panfish will like that as well as bass. you cant go wrong with a roostertail. fish with nightcrawlers or any of that gross smelling shit they have in the store for catfish at night.

You can go buy everything you need for less than 100. Go to Dick's sporting goods, buy a rod a reel for about 40 bucks (and ugly stick with a shakespeare reel will do just fine) and then go to Walmart and buy a $20 starter kit. You get a box with it, but the box is really too small. A good size box will be another 15 or 20. You get plenty of rigs with it, so chances are all you need now is just your bait. That's up for you to decide.

Ugly Stik makes a decent rod for the cheap. They are flexible and fairly sensitive. I haven't had one break by fishing yet. Though I did snap a tip once shutting it in my trunk

I've used the medium bigwater and tiger rods. I've also used their classic rods which are pretty nice too.

I've got a friend that uses Cabela's rods and he enjoys them.

For a reel I've always used Penn.

Currently I've got a Fierce 3000. It's just a nice balanced reel. I've also got a 2000 and 4000 that are great.

Hope that helps some

I saw some $30-$50 set ups (rod and reel combo) at Wally World, are these things any good for one that wants to occasionally fish for fun?

i've never seen a combo of any brand for under $50 that i would own, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be ok for someone who just dicks around at a pond a couple times a year.

i can't remember the last time i bought a combo anyway. usually crappy 2-piece rods and a janky reel. i put my own together.

That crappie had a big mouth lol. I got to get up on my fish game.

I decided to go with an el cheapo right off until i figure out what I am doing. I am excited for sure! I'll probably invest $100-150 sooner rather than later!

If my neighborhood has a pond owned by our HOA is this considered private property and no fishing license needed?

contrary to popular belief, you need a fishing license to fish on private property. had this discussion with folks at work a few years ago. i finally had to call NCWRC on speakerphone and get them to concur.

I highly recommend this for crappie. Last time i went i caught 3 fish on the first 5 casts with these. you may occasionally catch a bass or two with them also.

http://www.sliderfishing.com/1-1-2-Crappie-Panfish-Grub-Black-Chartreuse-Tail-CSGF5-CSGF5.htm

Typically, i have had very good luck with most dark jigs with yellow tails.

That yellow jig that I am using in those pics has done quite well considering I am banking fishing in hot weather for crappie.

What kind of fish is this? I know its not a bluegill or a crappie, but it was a great fighter relative to its size compared to crappie or bluegill of the same size. I caught a bunch of bait fish today lol! But it was fun!

Also what do you guys think of the Shimano Sedona and Sonora series?

it's just a small crappie

the sonora and sedonas are good for the money. i'm not that familiar with the newest versions of them, but i've got several of the older ones and they're ok.

But its lips did not extend like a crappie's lips does. And they were not soft like a crappie's lips either. I guess its a variety of crappie I have not seen yet?

What pole would you recommnd for 2500 or 4000 Sedona and Sonora? WHat about a 7 foot ugly stick with with fast action an medium power?

So, if I get that Sedona/Sonora and the Ugly Stik that a good set for fishing pan fish and can be used for bass? I want something that has a little flexibilty in terms of use. Most of my research indicates that this combo would do that, but I need a real live fisherman's input.

Shakespeare puts "Ugly Stik" on a bunch of different rods, mainly because it's a name recognized by casual fishermen. i don't keep up with the specs of the various Ugly Stik models, so it's hard for me to answer. i can tell you i don't own any of them.

they used to be fiberglass rods. i wouldn't buy a fiberglass rod. if they had some decent 1-piece high modulus graphite options, then i guess i would consider them. not sure if they do or not.

this is not that big a deal for the kind of farting around you're doing.
