i'm 187. i didn't fight in the civil war though, i was a conscientious objector. i remember hearing that william henry harrison died after catching a cold during some speech dealie. i struck it rich in what you young folks call the california gold rush. lost all my money in what is now called the great depression. then i went to NC State in 2003.
PROVE ME WRONG.

very interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_verified_oldest_people
so there are at least 5 people alive now who were born in the 19th century, and 4 out of 5 are americans!
about the japanese guy who died (op), this is crazy:
Quote : | "Kimura had 7 children (5 surviving), 14 grandchildren (13 surviving), 25 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren." |
outliving your children, though rare, is not that uncommon, but outliving one of your grandchildren is crazy!
and most shocking to me, there are way too many americans on these two lists
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldest_people http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_verified_oldest_people
interesting to see that americans born in the old times were just as healthy, or even healthier than the traditional healthy societies of today. but now, it has all gone down the grave.
Exactly 50 of the 100 verified oldest people ever to live, are/were Americans.
But I bet a 100 years from now, that percentage will reduce drastically, until some fountain of youth or whatever is found.
