Initially, the article made me really angry and sick, as it should have. But now, I am just trying to think how it is even possible for seemingly normal humans to do this.
Are they just wired differently, like many people claim pedophiles are? I can sort of understand that argument when it comes to pedophilia that is non-violent and does not involve little children, but this is way beyond anything that could be termed pedophilia. How can someone be wired to torture their fellow human--I guess, for sexual pleasure--in the most sadistic of ways without their consent? Or are they mentally sick? But that also implies they are wired incorrectly, and I really can't see how some neuron misfirings could compel someone to do all that is mentioned in that link.
I just don't get it. And for some reason, that article is really bugging me out, making me want to question humanity in general.
And how is that he was able to do it for such a long time? Didn't any neighbours see unusual happenings in the area? How come they even took the victim to California for a photoshoot with a bondage magazine? Did the magazine not see something out of the ordinary? Did the victim not get a chance to spill the beans at the photoshoot? They even made her perform at local strip clubs. Was she not able to inform people or security there?
This is just an all-around extremely weird story.
Interesting how similar awful stories usually come out of small towns which otherwise have almost no crime.
P.S. Sentences of 10 to 20 years? That's sick and sad. They will be out and then what? Life sentence or death sentence, I don't see how any judge could see any other options.
P.P.S. I would post the article, but you would have to click anyway to see the beasts' pics.

Meh, I'm not sure morality is instinctive in human beings. It's something that has to be indoctrinated in childhood. If instead of teaching a child to be moral, you constantly abuse him/her and give him/her no love, he/she can grow up without any conscience whatsoever. It could've happened to you, perhaps.
Also, I guess some people are just born evil, and never acquire a conscience despite their having had a good upbringing. But at any rate, a conscience is not something innate...it's something that was taught to you.
As for

it's not really that hard to explain. On a certain level, it's fun to dominate and torment one's fellow human beings. Collegiate wrestlers, nice guys off the mat, speak of the pleasure they derive from manhandling their opponents and twisting them into unpleasant positions. The joy of domination is why kids tease each other, why football players take pleasure in colossal hits, and why it's so satisfying, in poker, to bluff someone and then show them your cards. To abuse other people makes us feel better about ourselves. You do it too, I bet, in small ways.
Of course, most of us are virtuous enough not to do this except in minor, bearable ways. But some of us are genuinely evil, and take it to extremes.
And if you think I'm evil for this post, well, you're wrong, I'm not. But I feel that most of us take pleasure, sometimes, in the suffering of others (though the degrees to which we do this certainly form a large continuum.) And if you never take pleasure in other people's problems or pain - and I mean NEVER, you never snap at your wife when you're having a bad day, or any such thing - then you're a saint, and I commend you. But most of us have at least a tiny splash of evil in our blood.] 9/17/2013 1:11:52 AM

Somewhere between 1 and 4% of people are incapable of empathy. There may be a genetic or environmental link. If they are pushed into expressing emotions they don't have as young people, i think it is easy to see how they would pick up on the benefits of doing so and exploit them. Your average garden variety sociopath knows more or less where to draw the line to avoid detection. Others become manipulative nightmares that anyone with sense can see coming right away. And when these people are abused and made to feel pain and discover the thrill of vengance, and the triumph of self-advancement without a corresponding sense of empathy, some of them become monsters. But empathy is a skill that has to be developed and elaborated, as JBSG noted. However, I reject your notion of everyone being a bit 'evil', because i don't subscribe to your biblical notions of good and evil. Rather, the majority of us react to impulses of both selfishness and altruism and group think (which can also be a method of self-preservation as much as selfishness).
I do marvel at rat bastards such as this one though. http://www.torontosun.com/2013/09/10/reports-of-8-year-olds-marriage-and-death-denied

You think this is bad, look up the Junko Furuta case out of Japan. Jesus. And that was done by young people. Made me sick for a long time after reading that one. 9/17/2013 6:18:32 AM
