Continuing my annual thread tradition over the past many years, the NC Pride event is coming up this weekend. There are events all weekend long in Raleigh, Durham, and all throughout the triangle, but the main event is on Saturday with the fair grounds style tent set up, speakers, and marches around the Duke East Campus and 9th street areas.

There's usually a good NC State contingent marching to show their State pride. I usually aim to get there around 11:30ish, browse around the tents/shops/animal rescue set ups, maybe grab a bite from one of the food vendors or on 9th street, watch the parade, and head out by 2. It'll be the first NC Pride since the big Supreme Court decisions this summer, so there should be a lot of energy and a lot of people at this one.

Are all those empty seats from the NC Pride Events? Or the Tar Heels football game today?

Was everyone talking with that gay accent?

Honest question, and furthermore, why does that even exist?

Haha!

I don't think a lot of the speech listeners stayed for the proposal part, not that there were tons anyways, since it wasn't on any official agenda or anything, but between Pride and the Duke game there was a lot of traffic in Durham yesterday. The N&O is calling this the biggest NC Pride yet.

"Josh Allen with N.C. Pride called this year’s pride festival the biggest so far and the largest in the three-state area including South Carolina and Tennessee.

More than 140 vendors and more than 110 groups and 60 vehicles took part in the parade. The five-day festival that ends Sunday added two new events this year, a 5K run and a film night, Allen said.

Beyond the revelry, the LGBT community and its supporters were pushing for something more basic: equality.

“We’re making gains every day,” said Johnathan Smith, 23, of Raleigh. “Look what happened with Prop 8 in California and on a federal level with DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act)."

"The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Greensboro citing the Supreme Court ruling in seeking to overturn North Carolina’s constitutional ban."
