Quote : | " FBI Shuts Down The ‘Silk Road' Black Market, Arrests Infamous Owner 'Dread Pirate Roberts'
Federal authorities said Wednesday they had seized a website that was considered one of the most popular places on the Internet for buying drugs and other illicit goods and services.
In a criminal complaint, the FBI said they had charged Ross William Ulbricht, also known as "Dread Pirate Roberts," with operating the site, "Silk Road," since January 2011.
Authorities said the Silk Road provided an online platform for drug dealers around the world to anonymously sell narcotics -- including heroin, LSD and cocaine. The Silk Road was also a "sprawling black market bazaar" for buying and selling other illegal activities, including malicious software used for computer hacking, authorities said." |

I'm curious what they are referring to as "computer hacking." I imagine it's nothing more than "you are doing stuff we don't know how to do and that scares us so we'll call it 'hacking'" 10/2/2013 10:43:51 PM

probably custom virus' and comptuer worms to gain access to an account or something of the like... Or just people who used torrents in a P2P environment, trade it on that site and then gets automatically labeled as hacking, as you probably suspect. 10/2/2013 10:47:04 PM

If you read the details in the indictment this guy's in trouble for a lot more than just running Silk Road. He allegedly used hired thugs and hit men to deal with trouble causing users on the site including hiring a hitman to kill one user for $120k and claiming he had already had another one killed for $80k.

The complaint also notes that Canadian authorities had no record of a homicide in that area on or around that date, so it could have been a scam on the part of those two Silk Road users (who could be the same person), and DPR's remark about having paid much less for a "clean hit" earlier could have been a lie, a lowball tactic; it didn't actually charge Ulbricht in connection with the attempt to call a hit on someone, so the Feds might not have believed they had enough evidence to show probable cause, but still threw it in to show his character isn't as noble as his regurgitations of von Mises would have it seem. Quote : | "i bet it wasn't even the real dread pirate roberts. i bet he just took over for the last guy." | I remember reading that story in a Forbes interview, but now I'm thinking that was a lie too: Early in the history of the Silk Road, Ulbricht posted on bitcointalk about getting Web designers for SR, mentioning a GMail account tied to his real-life identity, and he posted a question on StackOverflow about using curl via PHP to fetch content over Tor for a hidden service, first under his real name, changed to an alias; they built up a case showing that he was almost surely in control of the site the whole way through until he got caught.
IMO the case against him is so good that the only question is how long he'll stay in Federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison (well over a decade if he takes a plea deal, the rest of his life if he goes to trial and has the book thrown at him); not even attempts by the libertarian idiots shouting "PARALLEL CONSTRUCTION" to provoke jury nullification are going to work (it's called "jury tampering" and leads to moving the venue and jury sequestration at best, and arrests of the dumb lolbs passing out flyers at worst): http://www.reddit.com/r/SilkRoad/comments/1nl8f9/jury_nullification_efforts_to_keep_dpr_out_of_jail/ ...yeah, that subreddit is now set to private but the URL says it all.
Now I'm curious to know where the hidden service was hosted; all the complaint says is that it was hosted in a foreign country; other servers were in the US, as well as several other countries, but I'm talking about the main website. It's curious that they didn't put that sort of splash image on the many .onion sites run out of Freedom Hosting after they nabbed its owner and seized the servers. 10/2/2013 11:41:07 PM

I just found a Federal grand jury indictment from Maryland, with similar charges, returned on 1 October; possibly a similar "true bill" will come from Southern New York (where the aforementioned complaint was filed, on 27 September) in a few days: https://ia601904.us.archive.org/1/items/gov.uscourts.mdd.238311/gov.uscourts.mdd.238311.4.0.pdf 10/3/2013 12:19:32 AM

I read an interview/article from somewhere within the last few months where he confirmed that he wasn't the original, he just took over for the guy who originally started it.

It turns out it wasn't a lie. It was a sting operation and as far as he knew he had actually paid $80k to have a guy killed.

I don't know about the permission properties involved with, but I assume it's easy to copy, but again just because you can copy it doesn't mean you can open it or bypass any sort of encryption. But I have never used this stuff so I'm not an expert. ![](images/rolleyes.gif) 10/7/2013 4:21:23 PM
