Well, what are the rules?
I know you're not supposed to mess with nesting turtles, or poach them for meat and stuff. But me picking this guy up as he was running towards the water was literally what kept the birds overhead from swooping down and eating it. 10/9/2013 5:42:18 PM

Just touching one is up to $25k, but probably more like $500.
I suppose it depend how douchey the ranger or whatever is that catches you.
All the sea turtles that visit NC are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Obviously that's a Federal Law, and you could probably be additionally raped under NC state law as well.
Just don't touch one and enjoy the circle of life. 10/9/2013 5:48:27 PM

Ok while EMCE is fine fondling sea turtles in Mexico you are not fine fondling them in South Carolina.
What you're doing is disturbing them, and you're at least breaking Federal Law if not also State law.
Just be careful, I don't really give a shit about sea turtles, but that's the way it is. 10/9/2013 8:36:17 PM

Did I say we touched it with our hands? Or maybe we called the sea turtle number posted everywhere on folly and waited for them to show up. Hm? 10/9/2013 9:18:40 PM

Maybe.
You can also get fined for harassing them in general, which probably includes being in their face with a camera, because the Endangered Species Act is really specific about flash photography, lights, reflections, etc.
Anything that could disorient an animal in general (basically).
Again, not trying to be a dick. 10/9/2013 9:34:32 PM

Oh shit! Should've left my studio equipment at home that day during the bright sunlit afternoon.
All joking aside, I wonder what the fine amount actually is. 10/9/2013 9:41:00 PM

At least $500, not more than $25k.
It starts to get massive ($100k) once you start messing with nests.
I only know all this because I know/knew a bunch of interns and workers at the conservancy on Bald Head Island.

"Helping" the turtles instead of "helping" the birds just because the turtles are cuter.
Shameful. 10/10/2013 12:26:46 AM

The only way you can help those turtles is by picking people up and carrying them off the beach 10/10/2013 1:28:29 AM

^^had a great time. they had a Sea Turtle sanctuary of their own, but none were scheduled to hatch while we were there. Apparently a large portion hatched the weekend before we arrived. 10/10/2013 10:20:52 AM
