If I want to be able to remotely access (not on same network) my home laptop with its lid closed, are there any easy remote access ways to do this?
Does anyone know if LogMeIn or similar products are able to do this? I'm seeing mixed answers while googling and I don't know enough about networking to be sure which answer is correct. 10/9/2013 9:57:47 AM |

By laptop lid closed you mean machine in standby mode right? 10/9/2013 10:10:33 AM |

yeah, right now i have it to go into standby when the screen closes and it is plugged in. I'd have to check for on batter, it may go into hibernate on battery but i can change this or leave plugged in. 10/9/2013 10:14:26 AM |

I've always used LogMeIn...
Quote : | "Is there at least one other computer on the same network that is both powered on and running LogMeIn Free or Pro? Is Wake On LAN enabled on the host? From the host, open LogMeIn and follow this path: Options > Preferences > Advanced Settings. Under Wake On LAN, make sure that Enable 'Wake On LAN' from sleep and power off is selected. Do you want to wake a PC that is powered off? For a Windows host that is powered off (but still plugged in), confirm that Wake On LAN is enabled in the computer's BIOS. Tip: Consult the user guide of your computer or motherboard to locate the appropriate BIOS switch, usually Wake On LAN from S5." |

That link cautions for Mac:
Quote : | "Confirm that the computer is on a wired network. Wake On LAN is not supported for Mac hosts on a wireless network." |
The lack of a similar warning for PC leads me to assume it'll work on a wireless for a PC as long as you have another computer on the network running their client.

Everything I'm seeing says it is (for PC), as long as your hardware supports it.

So there is no way to do this unless you have another computer on the network that is left on, which defeats the point. 10/11/2013 7:23:57 AM |
