I'm depressed in a mean-spirited way, and there's been talk of a visit to the fair this weekend. But I don't know if it would make things better or worse. We've also talked about seeing the Porsche exhibit and maybe seeing a movie. If I go to the movies, I really want to kick someone in the back of the head and get in a fight.

I've never really understood the appeal of the state fair. You pay to get in, pay to eat, pay for activities, and pay to ride. I'm surprised that the bathrooms aren't pay-to-use also. Growing up we went to the fair at Ft Bragg where you pay like $15 max as a civilian adult with all of the same rides as the state fair, and they are *free* to ride. Sure, you don't have quadruple-deep-fried-cola-sludge, but I think we could all do without that.

tl;dr version: BACK IN MY DAY...

you still had to pay for food back then right? so the only difference is it's $5 to get in instead of $15, and you pay per ride instead being able to ride all of them. i like the new system better as I don't trust carnies enough to ride their rides.

There is plenty of free stuff to see and do. I mainly like to go to all the animal stuff and see big ass rabbits and what not. My daughters love that. And outside of a couple kiddie ones, my family and I avoid all fair rides. Shit looks unsafe.

How are the crowds this year? Last year they were insane and it has made it less likely that we'll make a trip up this year.

We went as soon as the park and ride started operating Sunday and the crowds weren't too bad, but we were leaving around 2:30 or 3 and it was getting thicker by the minute.
