We have an idea to potentially travel to Tel Aviv, Jersusalem, Bethleham, Petra and Haifa from Christmas to New Years. Any experiences? Recommendations? or warnings?

Go support the apartheid regime... They can't maintain the brutal illegal occupation humane mutual-consent control without your tourist dollars

Stop working in the United States while you're at it because your tax dollars will always make up for whatever they don't get from tourism.

Several years ago, my sister in law took a sabbatical to go live in Israel for four months or so. The only useful thing that I can tell you is that she was advised not to travel to certain regions. During the time she was there, there was a lot of unrest over Gaza, The West Bank, Hamas, blah bah. Not only was she told to avoid these areas of conflict, but she was also an American government employee and there was just the remote chance of her being targeted by I dunno. *shrug* So just make sure you check with the embassy, make sure there aren't any travel advisories for the region. That kind of thing.

I'm an American government employee, and lived in Jordan from part of 2012 to February of this year. Also traveled to Jerusalem while I was there. As was said, be mindful of the travel advisories, but neither the Jordanian or Israeli government is interested in having Americans harmed. All of the areas listed are well protected. I would wager that New Years would be more fun in Tel Aviv than in Amman however.

I would love to see this part of the world simply for the amazing history, but I'd rather not get my head cut off.

I just spent 4 weeks in Israel. I felt completely safe everywhere I went. I don't know about Jordan, but I would assume that if you go to Petra (as some people I met did) you will be fine there also. You can go to Eilat and make a day trip to Petra from there. Don't forget to go snorkeling in Eilat. The red sea stays the same temperature year round, though the air temp will probably be lower in December.
