I kind of disagree with that a little bit. I feel that if he was diagnosed with PTSD that he should never been able to even get a gun.

Veteran or not I really don't care ...diagnosed with PTSD should trump being able to purchase weapons.

I agree that there's merit to limiting gun access to mentally ill folks, but that's a different discussion altogether. OP has made it clear in the past that he thinks guns should be illegal for all citizens and he set the tone in the thread title.

A deeply disturbed person who complained that he was unable to get adequate treatment for his problems killed his wife. That's incredibly sad, but I still don't see how people can blame the gun. They surely had a kitchen full of knives and plenty of other options that a physically healthy trained soldier could have used to kill someone, but this story gets focus because it involved a gun.

The end result is the same regardless. A family lost their child to violence. Taking the gun away would not have guaranteed her safety or the safety of anyone else around him. If the tables were turned and she used a gun to defend herself from him nobody would be upset about a gun being used to kill a person. People who are against gun bans would celebrate it and people who are for gun bans would conveniently ignore it. It's just sad.

Hypothetically GREEN JAY, if this man, an ex-soldier with strength and combat training on his side, were battering her to the point that she feared serious injury or death, would you be upset if she used a gun to essentially rescue herself from the situation? Or would you still say "fuck guns"? Even though that's not what happened here, it's not a far-fetched analogy. In trying to take guns away from folks like the killer, you have to accept that you're taking defenses away from many potential victims as well.

People who have never been around guns and do not know how to treat them with respect often hate them and deem them as nothing more than killing machines. They blame them for every death some deranged person used them as part of. I can understand this, it's what the media portrays, it's what you learned from video games. There is a responsibility to owning a gun I don't think y'all would meet anyway. The truth of the matter is there are shooting sports and hunting survival techniques and yes, self defense is also a good part to guns.

The truth about everything is you know the mentally unstable gravitate towards guns so if you consider yourself mentally stable and can honestly judge responsibly when you should or should not carry a gun then I would prefer you have the ability to. The simple fact is the bad guys have guns, we see it in the papers and on the news every day I would prefer more good guys or girls have guns too.

As was mentioned above the lady could have shot her husband and saved herself.

He could have hit her with a car. Or any of a million other things. It's the desire to kill someone that's the problem not the tool used to fulfill that desire.

i'm not sure if there's many, but there's some who own guns, but also understand that america has a gun violence problem and that needs to be addressed (which often goes hand in hand with mental illeness) and lots of people have guns that probably shouldn't
