I'd like something 500+ [actual] lumens without breaking the bank, and would prefer a focuser or whatever that's called. I figure Amazon is a good source but haven't really found anything compelling yet. Any ideas?

^^ Usage = looking for my dogs when they wander too far from the house Not anything where I need super durable or fancy. Budget=as cheap as possible. I just want it to actually be 500+ lumens...some of those lumen ratings on Amazon are obviously false.

It would be cool if they took C batteries or the like and didn't have a specialized battery/charger...but that isn't required.

Hands down, the best flashlight I've ever had is one I got a few years ago and wore on my fire helmet. It's called Streamlight 4aa luxeon. It's super small, doesn't carry a lot of batteries, but throws an unbelievably good focused light beam. The batteries last a long time too. A lot of emergency (and military, or so the website says) personnel carry this brand because of its ruggedness, waterproof, and weight. You could probably find one online for about $50.

Of course, you can't go wrong with a 4 cell maglite either. They are just heavy. I suppose they sell for $30.

i had the streamlight 4AA they issued us at work. i thought it was pretty good.

now they issue these, which have a concentrated beam and a separate flood lamp:

i've put both of them through hell and they keep on going.

From what I can tell, the streamlight 4AA is less than 100 lumens...I'm wanting >500

^ Oh look Walter is drunk. That explains his 100% investment on a speculative pharma stock

Can't beat these for the price, and they come with batteries included. Also, they use non-exotic C batteries. They have a focusing lens, and adjustment from flood to spot is of a slide type, not screw, so you can go through the whole range in under a second. In the focused mode, you can literally see the beam of light even on a clear, non-humid night.

They are heavy, but not Maglite-heavy. Quite a bit sturdier than the old-school maglites, maybe a bit over the top. Heavy and rigid enough to knock someone out or break a piece of tempered glass.

Not really. They cost about the same as good AA or AAA batteries. For non-CR123 lights, you should be putting lithium or a high quality rechargeable battery (like Eneloops) in your flashlights.

Hard to know what you consider breaking the bank, since there are crazy expensive lights out there. But for performance, check out anything from Fenix.

Perfect, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I used one once and it prompted this thread...very impressive light.

^^ 1000 lumens? It's probably not even half that.

Does anyone want one of these Costco 500 lumen lights? I definitely don't need 3 of them.

Keep one in the car, one in the kitchen drawer, and one in your go bag. Alkaline batteries will sit for quite a while without losing the charge, perfect for occasional use and emergencies (i support the Eneloop suggestion if you plan to use it daily).

I personally use them as a field light for video production when I can't bring my bigger 12v tungsten lights, and these run forever on one set of batteries (not to mention they don't require a bub replacement every 50 hours)

Lol ^^ not familiar with the t6 XML chip I'm assuming?

I'd guess low 900s they make over 1000 on 10 volts.

^ Seems lower than that based on the reviews. The pictures attached to the Amazon ad look pretty impressive though.

Do you use AAA batteries with them or the proprietary battery?

i did a lot of searching around for a good headlamp. i used some really crappy ones. what i found out is that you want the batteries to be in the back and you want a strap that goes over the top of your head. any other configuration and the thing just slips all over your forehead and won't stay put unless you just stand still. i did some reading on some flashlight forums (yes, they are wackos) and a lot of folks were recommending this remington-branded model:

http://www.amazon.com/Remington-RMHL4AA-BTP-High-performance-4AA-size-LEDHeadlight/dp/B001KYFZJG

i don't think it cost that much when i got it. i think it was more like $40, so maybe you can find it cheaper. anyway, i was skeptical because usually remington just slaps their logo on junk like this, but this is an excellent light. i've chopped firewood in it, laid under my truck wearing it, drug it all through the woods in the early morning, etc. and it has been great. i also like that it uses AA batteries. it has a diffuser to make the beam into more of a flood. has a red lamp to help preserve your low-light vision after you turn it off. i love mine. i've actually thought about getting another in case they stop making it.

actually went back and found one of the threads that pointed me to this light: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?217942-Remington-Arms-LED-Headlight-RMHL4AA-B-Review

If you want something cheap but yet very bright, for light use around the house you can't go wrong here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NK6Q7Y for ~$6

#1 on this list might be good too, but read the reviews to see how bright it actually is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/hi/3180291/

If you want something a little more heavy duty maybe go in ^ direction or something else off that list.

agreed with both above. i like my bigger one, but i often times find myself going back to my basic Petzl Tikka. mostly because it's lightweight and can fit in my pocket if i need to take it off. It's great for hiking and camping because it's so small.

but like they said, it's all about what you are going to be doing with it.

That's a good point. While my little ~$6 job is great for light use around the house, if I wanted to work on cars or run around in the woods and shit I'd get a top strap.

I got this headlamp, I like it because you can turn it on and off without touching it.

ALso nice that it has variable focus, and a "Night" red light mode
