Pretty egotistical.

Maybe the mom was just playing because it was fun to her. Kind of a dick move to presume she was playing for him.

Esp. If she played it obsessively. You would just accumulate gifts, and you have to do something with them.

She probably got more sick because she was tires of her shitty kids. And who gets polio anymore...
