I opened some miso soup today. This was in the top. I have never gotten miso that had this before. There's no English on the package to tell me what is going on.

Is this something I am supposed to add to miso soup, or is it a chemical preservative packet that says "WARNING DO NOT EAT"?

Pretty sure that if it was poison and sold in the US it would have to be labeled in english. Also there is a pot symbol.

I am betting you're supposed to eat it

You are giving a whole lot of credit to the sketchy Asian market where I bought it.

3rd entry from bottom

same as the word on the package

that picture of the bowl is misleading though. maybe it just means to not eat the foil wrapper, ha. I can't read the kanji (fancy chinese characters)

how about you just open it. If leaves and powder, add to soup. If chemical pellets, do not add to soup

I'm not sure how something in a foil packet is supposed to absorb moisture

Google Translate agrees with you: http://translate.google.com/#ja/en/%E3%81%9F%E3%81%B9%E3%82%8C%E3%81%BE%E3%81%9B%E3%82%93

(I actually just typed "taberemasen" and had it transliterate to hiragana, although the first character it chose by default was the kanji for "ta" and I used the IME to get the hiragana; then I verified that it looked the same as what was on the package.)

[Edited on January 16, 2014 at 8:08 PM. Reason : It's probably silica gel, a common desiccant.

the moral of this story is

do not buy food from sketchy asian markets that do not care if they may accidentally kill you

its authentic chinese

so even if its seasoning and spices, its actually chemicals and gutter sludge they turned into something that resembles seasoning and spices

I relish every opportunity to gamble my soul during dinner. An honorable instant noodle meal will test a man's determination to survive, and punish those that approach it with an impure heart.

This is what your nose is for. If it smells like food it is probably fine. It would be extremely sick and twisted to make silica gel that smells like food.

Also, how easy to open was the packet? If you were able to tear it open fairly easily it is probably meant to be eaten. If you had to use scissors or a knife you probably shouldn't eat it.

Chinese food makes it on the list twice. Once for using ground up poppy pods to addict people to their food, and another for using oil rendered out of sewer scrapings to cook with.

my friend that lived in Japan says:

the brand is "Vitalon" or Bitealong"
V(or b)i Ta L (or r) ong

With several people who can actually read it saying no dice, I won't eat it.

I still want to know what it is, though. And why is it in the top of miso block when it looks just like the little ramen seasoning packets?

It's probably MSG or flavoring.

Even in Japan, I seriously doubt they would include something in your food packaging that would kill you.

it's seasoning, they don't want you to eat the seasoning they want you to put it in the noodles.

According to the internetz:
Quote :
"Each of these bags include 8 servings made up of packets, with one containing the miso paste, and the other containing the dehydrated seaweed, tofu and other garnishments…"

please don't die. Where will I stay tonight?
