Not upset, it's just the first and only time I've ever heard Jobs ever talk openly about planned obsolescence. Considering that has LITERALLY been Apple's business model for the past decade, it struck me as very very strange to hear coming from Jobs.

^I find myself often wondering what other business models could get away with intentionally crippling their own products in order to boost new model sales.
Did the tech companies lawyer up well enough after Microsoft got it's ass handed to it court over including a browser in their OS that aggressively stealing your customers' product usability is now simply an unstoppable matter of course?
or is this a generational/cultural phenomenon?

Unnecessary proprietary components are legally ambiguous enough, but effectively breaking your devices after a new shiny comes on the market cannot go unpunished forever

I think you need to go back and watch the video again and then study a little bit about the Apple 1 history just now and rethink your choice using "planned obsolescence" and the sensational headline you used.

We're talking about a couple hundred custom, basically proof of concept machines, where only 1 guy in the world existed to support them. Read the history and you can see they even offered discounts on IIs to customers who were sending in 1s for support. Listen in the video where someone off stage points out that "they can't afford" it in regards to this "planned obsolescence" you think happened.

unsure of what point is being "proved" here. Companies stop support of products all the time. planning a product life cycle is hugely important to company profitability.

^^I did watch the whole video. I'm very well aware of Apple's history. He said the Apple I -> Apple II obsolescence was a "1 time thing" that wouldn't happen again.

Apple's entire existence is based on obsoleting and cannibalizing their own products every 24-36 months. They consciously end-of-life iOS releases every 2-3 years, end-of-life data and power connectors every 2-3 years, end-of-life product lines every 2-3 years, cannibalize their entire product range every 1.5-2 years.

^I'm not trying to prove any point. It's just interesting. Maybe Jobs was lying to everyone. Maybe he learned along the way that actually cannibalizing your own products is a sustainable and lucrative business model. Maybe the technology industry changed (Moore's law) to make Apple's current model possible/successful. I just think it's interesting.

I own an iPod nano, iPad3, iPhone 5s. In the past have owned an Apple IIe, Mac Mini, iPod 3rd gen, iPod 4th gen, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS. Loved every one of them (except maybe the Mac Mini).
