doesn't really matter. the blue jays lost their series over the weekend too. the o's basically have an insurmountable lead at this point. teams generally don't lose their division when they're up by this many games

notice my use of qualifiers like "basically" and "generally." what happened with the 2011 Red Sox was the exception, not the rule. the orioles certainly could shit themselves that badly, but it's not likely to happen

What about the 2011 Atlanta Braves? Not leaders of their division, but still a pretty b ad collapse.

With 27 of the final 40 games against the AL East, nothing is safe for the Orioles right now.

But if any team can do it, this is the team. They have put themselves in an awesome position.

so here's a bunch of teams with similar leads in mid august and how things turned out:

2013 - Dodgers up 7.5 games over Diamondbacks, wound up 11 games up.
2012 - Reds up 7 games over both the Cardinals and Pirates, wound up 9 and 18 games up, respectively.
2011 - Phillies up 8.5 games over Braves, wound up 13 games up
2010 - Rangers up 8.5 games over Angels, wound up 10 games up
2009 - Yankees up 7.5 games over Red Sox, wound up 8 games up
2006 - Tigers up 6.5 games over White Sox, wound up 5 games up
2004 - Braves up 8 games over Marlins and Phillies, wound up 13 and 10 games up, respectively
Dodgers up 6.5 games over Padres and Giants, wound up 6 and 2 games up, respectively.

the AL east is pretty weak. they've pretty much got it locked up.

also, as of august 14th, baseball prospectus had the odds for the AL east division crown looking like this"

Orioles 92%
Blue Jays 4%
Yankees 3%
Rays 2%
Red Sox 0%
