With March Madness arriving I'm just curious what other schools you cheer for, or like to watch play sports and which schools you really dislike.

I'm from Iowa and have relatives who graduated from Drake, Northern Iowa, Iowa, and Iowa State. I like to cheer for the Iowa schools when they aren't playing NC State.

I like Harvard too since my brother in-law went to grad school there.

As for my favorite academy, that would be Army. A guy on my soccer team has 3 kids who went to Army and an old neighbor of mine from childhood went there too. Outside of that I have no connections to the academies.

As far as neutral schools I would have to say Gonzaga, UNCW, Mississippi State, Colorado, Northwestern, Florida, and Boise State are my favorites.

^Yeah I found myself cheering for ASU in the Rose Bowl vs Ohio State and then UF in the Sugar Bowl vs FSU, but now I really don't care to see their basketball team win. I won't mind if they win a lot, if we win a title in basketball before them.

Besides UNC, of course, I despise Ohio State. I think my hatred started around 2003-2004 when Philip Rivers almost beat them. Then they became the Luckeyes and kept weaseling their way into championship games and getting their ass beat. Also, they have tons of bandwagon fans.

Being from Iowa I have never really cared for them. They are kind of the UNC of the Big Ten. You either love them, or hate them.


As for the others, I guess being an NC State fan and from Iowa has taught me to love the underdog. I was so glad to see Colorado run Nebraska into the ground and hand them their worst loss ever a while back when they finally ended their long losing streak to Nebraska. I'm ready for Army to end the streak vs Navy too and hopefully win the CIC Trophy. I don't like Virginia Tech because of the whole ACC expansion thing and how they got into the league. I still wish we had a 9 team ACC. My dislike for UConn started in 1999 when they won the national title. They pretty much took out every team I was cheering for that year including Iowa. Plus they beat Butler in a national title game too and knocked NC State out of the tournament once.

I usually pull for any of the 'state' schools. and the HBCUs, because when they win its hilarious.

As far as hate, the only real college program I hate is Carolina. There are some programs I'd like to not see win, like the Kentuckys, Kansas', and Ohio States of the world.

All other rules flow from the basic premise, i.e., what would be best for State and/or hurt Carolina the most.

I grew up in NC rooting for State, and I think every person in my recent family tree either went to State, the military, or was a housewife. I have no interest in other teams except UNC... because you know...fuck them. The user above pretty much nailed it.

I pull for Georgia in football as my dad went there and I grew up a Dawgs fan. In general I'll root for underdogs in most situations and the ACC sans UNC.

I hate UNC, UF, South Carolina, and Ohio State.

I hate UNC, Duke (pretty much just basketball though...and I was rooting for them during football this season), and ECU. To a lesser degree, MD.

I also tend to cheer against the newer ACC schools...just because I don't wanna see them come in and see immediate success in their first year or whatever

I don't follow Clemson like I do NC State, but my best friend and roommate is a huge Clemson fan so we'll watch most Clemson games together and I'll cheer for them. They've just become a team that I watch fairly regularly and tend to have a pretty positive opinion about their program and fans. I don't consider myself a Clemson fan by any stretch, but that's one team that I have no problem cheering for unless they are playing State.

During bowl season or March Madness there are teams that, for whatever reason, I tend to gravitate towards or away from. Generally, and this is probably because I grew up a State fan and went to State, I kind of cheer for land grant schools when it's a game that I have no real rooting interest in. For example, I'll always cheer for Kansas St over Kansas, Iowa St over Iowa, Ok St over OU, Michigan St over Michigan, Miss St over Ole Miss, Oregon St over Oregon, and Texas A&M over Texas.

I pull for Miami and Duke except against State (I strongly considered both before deciding not to pile up debt and go to State). I also pull for Missouri and Kansas as I have family who went to both.

I really fucking hate Michigan, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. Don't much care for Maryland, Southern Cal, or Texas.

I cheer for Syracuse (Aunt), from before it was known they were coming to the ACC. But now i can count on them as extra ammo to take down Duke/UNC. The only other team i hated worse than Duke/UNC was Maryland in the Greivis Vasquez era

My favorite team is anyone that is playing UNC. Recently I've found myself cheering for Duke more often. I think its because it really pisses UNC fans off when Duke wins anything, and there is nothing I like more than a pissed off UNC fan.

Love State. Hate Carolina, Maryland and anyone who deals us a particularly devastating loss (excellent example: Ohio State's triple OT win against us in 2003). As others have said, I spend the rest of my time calculating which results will benefit us and harm UNC the most, and I cheer accordingly.

East Carolina has never bothered me, and now that I'm in grad school there, I don't mind seeing them win a few games -- as long as it doesn't hurt us or help Carolina.

Oh yeah I forgot to add I hate Maryland. I remember one year they lost to UNC in the ACC tournament not that long ago and most State fans were actually happy to see UNC win because we hated Maryland that bad that year.

I have never developed a strong hate for Wake, or Duke. I will pull for Duke when they play head to head though. I hated Wake the most when Chris Paul was there and he punched Hodge and later hit a game winning shot at the buzzer. With them it all depends on who is on roster.

2. Any school against Chapel Hill. But I've gotten confused during Duke-Chapel Hill match-ups in the past. And I might have been in Chapel Hill for the '05 championship. I was desperate for friends. Of course, other than that night, I regularly talked shit and alienated myself at social gatherings. I would be doing so good, holding it together, and then it would just spill out of me: I fucking hate you... LOL, so awkward.

3. All the underdogs...unless I've been made aware that their success would benefit Chapel Hill in some way.

Too many wal-mart fans to be the NC State of Kentucky. I know idiots that went to SLU or Dayton who are the biggest UofL fans. Some of the worst people I've ever met were UofL fans, so that kind of taints my view.

Half my people are from NC, and they pull for State. The other half is from TN; they hate the Vols and also pull for State.

I'll cheer for schools that I have ties to in one way or another.

My Dad went to Penn State so I pretty much grew up believing that Joe Paterno was a God. If I can find 1 positive thing about my Dad passing away, it's that it happened before the whole child molestation scandal. I still pull for PSU though.

Bro-in-law went to VT, so I pull for them in every game except when they play NCSU.

Wake Forest because of the Triad connection.

Appalachian because pretty much half of my HS graduating class went there. Plus my GF's family lives near Boone.

The only 2 teams that deviate from this rule are UNC and ECU. I have friends that went to both, but I refuse to pull for them ever.
