http://arstechnica.com/science/2014/04/nasa-must-immediately-cease-all-contact-with-russia/
Nasa was told today to quit talking to Russia on everything but the ISS. I dont think that little bit is going to last long.
Even though the ISS is exempt, I forsee counterpoint real quick of "Ok go find your own way home and back up from now on". 4/2/2014 8:08:58 PM

i posted this in a couple of threads earlier...

my feeling though is that the ISS was born as an object of unity, and even though the cold war was over when it was agreed on, the partners were able to work through many cold-war era conflicting views to build it. I fully believe it will survive.
There are a couple of major hurdles that the US needs to overcome if shit does hit the fan. First, one of our main workhorse rockets (the Atlas series) runs with an engine (RD-180) that is built by a russian company. US companies have looked into "coproducing" the rocket engine in the US and have translated blueprints, etc, but it will require $$$ to get the production line running. (and we do have a stockpile of the motors already sitting in storage that can carry our needs for a while)
The second is that without the russians, we currently have NO way to get astronauts to the space station. Commercial crew is promising, but the funding has been anemic and it is still several years down the road, although the head of nasa claims that if funding is increased we can shave a year off the time until we have a domestic capability to low earth orbit. 4/2/2014 8:33:08 PM

maybe when nasa gets fully absorbed by the EPA they can get funded again. shame it'll only be iran grade rockets made of like fucking.. free range rocket parts harvest with all gore's personal blessings and shit. but nasa has to stay alive. or get re-booted.

^That would solve absolutely every single funding issue NASA has ever had and I am fully in support of it.
Don't worry though, the ISS isn't going anywhere. If needed commercial crew can take over a lot sooner than expected. 4/3/2014 3:14:11 PM

I don't think Russia can keep funding their space program (specifically the ISS) without the $$$ that the US spends to have our people up there. 4/3/2014 4:22:50 PM

I would never retire my current car before I had a replacement. Seems like commonsense to me. I would love to see Russia say fuck off, go find another way to the Russian Space Station 4/3/2014 4:23:53 PM

Not sure if serious, but the X37B is an unmanned spaceplane, and has no capability to carry crew. There was a "powerpoint" X37C a few years back which would be a scaled up version that could carry crew, but there is no funding nor plans to design or build it. 4/3/2014 11:31:08 PM
