Same here. Civ V is a great place to start making a game off it. No need to reinvent the wheel. 4/12/2014 7:07:02 PM |

Ive never played Alpha Centauri, so is it like Civ style or more a space based thing? I was thinking it would more be, find planets, colonize, and build a planet civ. Repeat and take over the galaxy. 4/12/2014 9:14:57 PM |

meh I wish they'd spend more time making the political system better. No reason they can't build more future complexity on top of starting of on the ancient time. I usually turn off the turn limit anyway. 4/12/2014 9:34:37 PM |

^ I agree. I got tired of telling another civ "don't do such and such", they'd say "ok, we won't" and then the next damn turn they'd do it 4/12/2014 11:05:13 PM |

^Yeah plus there isn't any nuance. It's either go completely out of your way not to piss anyone off or immediate denunciation and war. 4/13/2014 10:40:34 AM |

^ that's not farfetched... a craft that can travel through the vacuum of space efficiently isn't necessarily well suited for traveling through atmospheres. 4/14/2014 5:54:31 PM |

Stupid me always thought Civ games were RTS so I never even bothered.
It's turn-based?? Holy hell I might just like that! Can you demo Civ 5?
Edit: Yep, sure can. See Demo on Steam. I think I'll try it out tonight.

I'm not sure if it's a demo for Civ 5 vanilla, G&K, or BNW....but the expansions definitely add to it. 4/25/2014 4:25:00 PM |

Alpha Centurai was a lot different than Civ. You received techs instead of units when you researched, so you had to build a beta unit first with the new tech (e.g. a pulse weapon or something) before you could mass produce it. The barbarians were some sentient AI alien mossy pools. IDK, I wasn't crazy about it.. it was different. 4/25/2014 5:03:29 PM |

I kind of dislike 5 in comparison to 4 so I haven't really played a ton of it even though I own it and the expansions. Should probably give it a whirl again. Never really been a bad civ game in my opinion. 4/25/2014 7:44:06 PM |

Looking back, Civ 3 was definitely less of an improvement version-over-version. 4/25/2014 9:11:56 PM |

the problem with civ5 is the timing is all messed up. theres no time to actually live and fight in an era. As soon as you build archers and send them across the map, knights are being built. If you turn time to slow, it just takes longer to build things, Theres no way to accelerate production and slow down time so that you can live in each era.
This would make sense for space travel since you're sending things hundreds of years into the future. 4/26/2014 3:40:04 PM |

while we're on the topic, loved civ 4 but never got civ 5 after hearing bad things, is it worth getting (did the expansion/patches address the issues) or is still civ 4 still better? 10/24/2014 12:53:54 PM |

Make sure to install the Mantledrivers from AMD so you can get the performance boost, if you have an AMD GPU.
My first game I got handled by the aliens. I re rolled and landed in a clearer area and had it much easier. But siege worms will own you.

Gotta be honest, having a little buyers remorse with this game. It feels like a have finished mod to Civ BE. Much (especially the dialogs) is just copied over and there are several features missing.
My biggest complaints is the AI is still pretty dumb, lack of variety in the units, diplomacy is still terrible, and a lot of the UI. 10/26/2014 5:52:35 PM |

I had a weird ending to my first standard time game. I made it to turn 371 and it just ended with some message about "we thought we would survive" or some such shit. Nobody is really close to their victory progression and I was nowhere close to finishing myself. But yea, so my first game just abruptly ended.
Otherwise I am enjoying it. Glad I did not pay full price for it though. 10/27/2014 10:35:25 AM |

I'm not sure if it's better than the finished product of Civ 5 + all the expansions, but I think it's better than Civ 5 vanilla, and I absolutely can't stop playing it. My first couple games I wasn't convinced I liked it because the differences were just a little too different from Civ 5 for my comfort. But it has grown on me a lot. 10/27/2014 5:15:14 PM |

I thought Harmony would be the worst of the affinities, but there's something really fun about their late game strategy. The mega-zergling is awesome too. 11/2/2014 8:42:07 PM |
