So a bumblebee has decided that my new shed is his castle. Almost every time I approach it, this bastert comes buzzing me.
I know, I know, we're supposed to love and cherish and save bees. Well it's my life or his; and I'm not letting a single bee with a real estate issue put my life at risk
So, how do I get rid of this thing and prevent this in the future? I've tried the old sugar water in a bottle with the top inverted trick. The bee is apparently no fool. 4/12/2014 9:32:55 PM |

I did chase it with a shovel earlier. I'm sure my neighbors enjoyed the show.
I'll try the tennis racket next. 4/12/2014 9:57:24 PM |

its probably not a bumblebee, probably a carpenter bee, and contributes essentially nothing to the world, unlike honey bees. kill it with prejudice. is your shed made of wood? they appeared around my house this week, i have killed about a dozen already, 4/12/2014 10:12:12 PM |

WD40 in their nest and they'll relocate... either to another location or to the ground as a corpse. Insects don't do well in petroleum products... 4/12/2014 10:26:27 PM |

pretty sure it's a bumblebee. shed is metal... so yeh, not sure why this thing likes my shed. no clue where the nest is; I've tried following it, but it's too quick.

Carpenter bees don't have stingers, right? That's something to consider when it comes to dealing with it.
Also, poison. 4/13/2014 12:33:38 AM |

In my experience neither carpenter bees nor bumblebees are particularly aggressive. However YMMV. Also, if you're allergic, I wouldn't take the risk. 4/13/2014 2:19:13 AM |

Yeah if its just one bee then just kill the damn thing with whatever you can hit it with. If you dont want to get stung then give a neighbor who isnt afraid a six pack of beer to smack it for you. 4/14/2014 11:23:34 AM |

I torched one with my grill lighting torch the other day, he started buzzing around my grill at a very poorly planned time. 4/16/2014 10:14:03 PM |

Bumblebees won't sting unless you directly fuck with their nest. Don't fuck with the nest. Problem solved.
I have a nest right now in my shed somewhere. They're pretty smart (for insects) and the guards have learned to ignore me. I keep them around because I need them later to pollinate my garden. My honeybees are almost useless in that regard.
You can tell the bumblebees because they're fat, and more black than yellow. Not sure what carpenter bees look like. Bumblebees will nest to ground, or a hole they particularly like.
I've got it all in my backyard: honeybees, mud daubers, bumblebees. I carry my Epi pen with me because of my fun allergy to stinging insects. Irony.

They look like bumblebees, except bumblebees have fuzzy abdomens and carpenter bees have shiny abdomens. Not the most useful info unless you can get close enough to catch this detail.4/17/2014 5:50:05 PM |

You chased it with a toy? You need at least an axe, maybe a chainsaw. And if that doesn't work, a[n] [armored] bulldozer.4/17/2014 7:24:17 PM |

I've been on a carpenter bee rampage the past couple weeks. Those little fuckers can do some serious damage if you let them. One of them actually put a hole all the way through the wood part of my front screen door. And yes, I keep a tennis racquet on the front porch.

On the topic of tennis racquets, have any of you guys used these things? They are incredibly effective.
