I graduated from NCSU in December with an accounting degree. After growing up in Cary and going to school in Raleigh I wanted to see something a little different, so I'm going to UVA in August for my masters in accounting and then looking to take, and hopefully pass, the CPA next summer. Went up there a few weeks ago for the first time and really liked the campus & Charlottesville area.
Anyone got some recommendations for good places to visit, bars, restaurants, etc? Probably gonna head back up once or twice before I start there in August so I'm looking to check out a few places. 4/14/2014 10:34:23 AM |

Continental Divide. Unmarked hole in the wall bar with Southwestern fare. Good shit. Small place. Nice beer selection and great margaritas. Food is pretty damn good too. Weekends it can get busy though and might be hard to find a table.

Definitely see a show at the Jefferson if you can. The Ntelos Pavilion also does Fridays after Five, which are free shows. I frequent Beer Run just east of downtown; it's a solid place to eat and drink. Hit up a Bodo's Bagels; Skybar on the downtown mall; Marco and Luca for dumplings (also on the mall); Tip Top in Pantops for breakfast/brunch. Just to say you did it, get drunk and go to Gus Burger. Sultan Kebab has great Turkish food (just north of the city on 29). The Blue Moon Diner on West Main Street is supposedly great too, although I have't been there yet.
Three Notch'd is a relatively new, but pretty good brewery (there are also South Street Brewery and Champion) If you haven't been to Monticello, it's worth your time. Cville has pretty good trails throughout the city which you should take advantage of. If the weather is still nice when you move, go down to Scottsville and tube down the James River. 4/15/2014 6:19:42 PM |

i used to live in c-ville. My sister still lives there. Pretty cool city. Traffic is terrible, they've outgrown themselves and haven't added more roads to make up for it. Other than that, its fun. They've expanded a lot over the past few years.
Downtown mall area is a great hangout, uva corner also awesome. Mellow Mushroom there, few other decent restaurants. They used to have a great thai place called monsoon cafe, but it's been gone for years now. Sad face. 4/18/2014 11:01:56 AM |

Thanks for the suggestions. I was dead set on going to Boston College after wanting to live in Boston for so long, but I was really disappointed in Chestnut Hill. Really enjoyed Charlottesville, looking forward to getting up there in August. 4/20/2014 9:57:43 PM |

So it's not a boring academic town like Durham or Clemson? There's a potential job opportunity coming. 10/4/2018 9:56:24 AM |

Charlottesville is WAY nicer than Clemson.
It is not nearly as active or as large as Durham (though both have their moments with Confederate Statues.)
It's more like Chapel Hill, tbh. 10/4/2018 11:44:56 AM |

Except when the Nazis show up.
I will say if you've got time to go up there towards the end of this month to visit, it's about to be PRIME Fall color season in Appalachia.

Bump.
Going up there tomorrow on a last minute trip for the weekend. Any recommendations on restaurants, breweries, bars, and wineries? Or anything else? Do they have a particular dish or bbq or anything they're known for culinary-wise?
All I know is I want to try to line up at least two wine tastings or so, see downtown and UVA, and I guess see Montecillo (is that worth it?) on the way in. Staying downtown at an AirBnB. 12/27/2018 4:36:02 PM |
