first time i started it since the fall

runs fine with choke engaged

sometimes runs OK with choke engaged and full throttle (can use the choke as a 'throttle' but dies at about 1/3 open)

will idle with choke half or fully open, dies with any throttle input at all

even if its running with choke closed and full throttle obv no power. cutter head barely turning.

fucking four stroke troy bilt shitbox

this is what you get when your thought process ends at "my troy bilt lawnmower is great i want a matching weedeater,"

will any amount of carb cleaner fix this or am i rebuilding the tiniest carb ever?

its possible i guess, but i feel like i burned a whole tank off fiddling with it

i guess the gas in my actual receptacle could be old but hell the lawnmower ate it just fine

^ yeah i'd get some fresh gas and try again

my blower and weedeater do the exact thing you're describing when using old gas...lawn mower is more forgiving

It's either old gas or crudded up fuel lines/jets clearly it running too lean without the choke closed so she's not getting enough fuel.

Also your fuel oil mix could be screwed by evaporation which I know seems strange but excess oil means you are running lean.

it's bad gas that gummed up the carb. replace the carb. they're like $20-30. you don't come out ahead trying to rebuild these little things.

My mower is jacked up right now.
Starts, sputters, dies. I put in a new spark plug, but that didn't help.
I can keep it running with a mist of carb cleaner through the intake, but as soon as I stop, it cuts off again.
I had very little gas in it when it was put away, and I filled it with fresh gas before I tried to start it.

I pulled the damn starter cord for about 20 minutes, so I'm sure I'm into the new gas.

I think the carb is gummed up. Is a Briggs and Stratton engine.

Having never messed with Carbs before, how difficult is it to clean out, and do I need anything special?

I used to clean a Briggs and Stratton carb all the time, and it was very easy. I just took apart wtih a screwdriver, rubbed it all down in a bucket of gasoline, and put it back together again. That was back in the 90s though, not sure if the new ones are different.

^^screw the mixture adjusting screw all the way in while counting the turns. that way when you put it back in you can bottom it out and then back it out the same number of turns. that's the only trick i know of.

pull it all apart and clean it out. spray carb cleaner in all the holes with the little plastic straw. replace the diaphragm and gaskets.

Goddamnit people.

If you have spark and the little butterfly moves you have fucked up fuel.... Either rubber has failed and it's dumping way too much fuel or it's gummed up and your don't have any fuel.

Carbs are available online and as nrr said cheaper and way quicker than rebuilding.

Step 1 check spark...
If no spark and plug/wire is ok then your magnito is fucked... Good luck

Step 2 if spark is good... Replace carb lol.

Done.

^exactly

and if you'll make it a point to find some ethanol-free gasoline to run in your small engines, the fuel problems will become much less frequent. otherwise, prepare to clean/replace a carb every spring.

before snatching the carb check if it will run with the primer bulb pushed. ethanol will deteriorate the primer bulb and cause it to crack. if it allows air to enter it will exhibit symptoms you've described.

Ive meant to run ethanol free in mine for a long time, but I get a lot of free gas so I just use whatever I get. Then last fall, I got some ethanol free for once and this spring the thing runs like shit. ALSO my leaf blower died, on the same tank of valero ethanol free. I mean it burned up the piston died not carb problem died. WTF not blaming the e-free, but this is how I am rewarded for putting the"right" gas in my junk...

Going weed eater/blower shopping real soon, guess its back to the free gas.

This thread is the only time in my life I've been glad to have an electric weedeater.

Plug in, click button, turns on. No fucking around with chemicals, no mixing gas, nothing like that. On the other hand I have that damn cord to drag around, and I'm too tall for the trimmer so I'm frequently bent over at an odd angle to use the damn thing.

^ no doubt. I've got one of those small Worx ones. It does ok for a small job, but the battery never seems to last long enough and it is too short for me. None the less, I prefer it over mixing crap and lugging around some heavy bastard of a weedeater.

One of my frustrations with mine is that the auto-feed sucks. It will feed out too much, get wrapped around itself, and the next thing I know there's 5ft of trimmer line wrapped around the trimmer head.

It's also one speed...on or off. Nothing in-between. I don't always need it going 7,500rpm.

no, there was a rumor going around for a while that all valero gas was e-free. just wanted to make sure you weren't operating under that false assumption.

you pansies make it sound like a 2-stroke weedeater is just tons of work. it's very simple if you buy a decent piece of equipment from the start and know what you're doing.

i've gotta buy gas anyway. all i do is dump a pre-measured oil bottle or two in a small jug and fill it up with one or two gallons of gas. i am lucky in that down here around wilmington there are several places to obtain e-free fuel, two of which i pass almost daily.

my stihl holds enough string to last me from spring to fall and only takes a few minutes to refill. it bump feeds very well. this is that whole buying decent equipment and knowing what you're doing thing.

i bought my stihl used and have had it for 4 years. in that time, all i've had to do is change the sparkplug and air filter once and replace the carb ($27) once. two quick stops at the local stihl dealer and less than an hour worth of total maintenance time in 4 years. that's way less than i'd have spent unrolling and rolling up drop cords in 4 years. it usually starts in 5 pulls or less.

but, yeah, if you buy a piece of shit from walmart and don't know how to maintain it, then you're going to have trouble and should probably stick to the electrics.

i guess the battery powered ones wouldn't be bad for folks with very small yards.

[Edited on May 6, 2014 at 5:10 PM. Reason : the carb was the split primer button thing mentioned earlier.]

My bro in law had a 16v 4 years ago it took him longer to weed eat then mow the lawn.

I dunno about the new 40 volt shit but lipo/brushless shit can get serious power in a small package so maybe.

My neighbors 1/16 scale rc car has 2.2 hp and does 68mph so surely a weed eater could have some balls if they wanted it to.

Fuck an electric weedeater. I had a black & decker 18V (I think) model. Even with a spare battery, I couldn't edge my entire yard and trim around the fence & foundation in one shot. It couldn't edge for shit anyway. It was supposed to be continuous feed but that rarely worked right. Damn thing was nothing but trouble. Whenever I buy a house, I'm getting a damn 2-stroke trimmer and blower.

My 2 stroke line trimmer started instantly this spring after not winterizing it. I'm sure at some point this year I'll need to refill the line and maybe change the air filter, but it is way better than the cordless b&d I had for a few years prior.

My Toro mower on the other hand had to have the shit cleaned out of the carb the past two years just to get it to start.

I got one of the 36v B&D weedeaters last year. Shit is boss. Battery charges in 20 minutes. Autofeed, head rotates to edge by holding down a button and twisting, and is powerful enough to chop down the shit that grows alongside the creek that runs through my yard.

I was a little hesitant to buy it at first because I'd always used gas, but after reading tons of good reviews on it I broke down and bought it. Couldn't be happier.

My experience is that a $80 2 stroke will run like a champ for 4 or 5 years.....then something breaks and a new $80 weedeater will solve the problem.

that's a good strategy if you don't mind shitty equipment that's low on power. reliable, high quality equipment makes yard work a little less of a pain-in-the-ass. if you value those things, you're much better off to spend a little more for a good name brand trimmer and maintain it properly.
