He doesn't live there. Article says he was visiting friends, so I would assume his friends live in a cheap apartment.

When I lived at UWoods they really were kind of nice. They were brand new, and still inexpensive, but they were safe and clean. Nothing special, but not a bad place to live either.

I lived there from 2007 to 2010 and my apartment was never broken into or anything. Pretty sure drug dealers lived across from us, but they were a nice family. There were lots of parties every weekend, but that's to be expected in a college apartment complex. It wasn't terrible and I'm pretty sure my boyfriend's apartment complex behind Wendy's was 3 times scarier.

When we were leaving his apartment people would walk out in front of the cars to beg for money. However, we did get a gun pointed at us walking from University Village to U Woods, so maybe you're right.

i stayed behind Wendy's/across from the McKimmon Center. i felt as safe there as i did anywhere else i ever went in Raleigh the 4 years i was there.

I don't know that the area is ghetto. It is just students are more easily the targets of a robbery, they are less likely to be prepared to defend themselves. (more likely to be inebriated, less likely to be armed, etc)
