Wait, we are supposed to be able to see sand-grain sized particles in space?5/23/2014 8:44:11 AM |

happens all the time. when they enter the atmosphere they are travelling so fast they compress/heat the air as they plow through, causing the particle to visibly burn up as it streaks across the upper atmosphere.

I finally got good night-time photography last month using the intervalometer on my D800 and a wide-angle lens. Now I have an 8mm DX fish-eye lens, so I can get real wide stuff with my D7000 or some insane shots with my D800. Either way, I think I am going to be out tonight. 5/23/2014 10:45:11 AM |

With all the light pollution around Raleigh, you are going to have a tough time seeing much near campus. I think Jordan Lake is the closest area. 5/23/2014 2:35:39 PM |

Where exactly do y'all go out a Jordan Lake? I know the parks out there close at sundown. 5/23/2014 3:22:16 PM |

Boat ramps are open 24/7.
CHAOS and Morehead Planetarium go out to Ebenezer Recreation Area. Also you could try the Farrington Boat Landing. I am doing Ebenezer as it can face north across the water, which is what I want to shoot across. 5/23/2014 6:56:24 PM |

I was out from 2:00-4:30 and didn't see many, but did get a few at Jordan Lake. One of my last set of shots around 4:10 captured the biggest fireball the group At the boat landing saw. Another guy was out there doing timelapsed photography and had just moved his camera and missed the shot. Gave that new 8mm a workout tonight. Great timing and had a good time, even if it wasn't a phenomenal shower or anything. 5/24/2014 5:05:21 AM |

Went out from midnight until 1 and saw probably 8. Most of them were really faint and clouds rolled in so our viewing space was limited. Good times. 5/24/2014 10:25:17 AM |

Massive dud of a shower. Saw about 5 total from Lexington, Va. 5/24/2014 6:02:57 PM |

I saw a lot of lightning bugs too - that actually made me happy
I didn't hold out realistic hope that there were going to be a lot of them, because I only saw 3 on the entire evening (I wasn't particularly actively looking, however) and 2 of those were before 11:00 PM, so... I just kinda assumed at 2:30 since I hadn't seen any yet that it wasn't as big as it had been predicted to be
it was cool tho - I took out the binoculars and saw some cool clusters and (I think) nebulae (whatever the proper term is; am too lazy to look it up currently), and it was really nice and clear over here and an excellent temperature for it ] 5/25/2014 11:29:04 PM |

^^beautiful place. do you know anything about the historic lexington brick pattern? my dad's mom passed away recently and her porch was made with original "lexington bricks" and I have a few.

We go up there all the time since my Mom lives in the area.
Never heard about the brick pattern. I'll keep my eyes open for it from now on.
We did see the weird ass Mark Kline robot guy in BV though.

i went outside for like 10 minutes at about 3:00.
i saw probably 3-4 meteors. but like NeuseRvrRat said, i can see that many on just about any night i go outside and stare up at the sky. one of the few perks of living in the middle of fucking nowhere, i guess. 5/26/2014 3:11:05 PM |

I've seen several really nice ones the last few nights
I assume they're Perseids, which are supposed to be around this time a year, and a shower might occur around Aug 12 or 13 maybe?
one of them lasted about 5 seconds 7/28/2014 12:21:52 AM |

You are seeing the delta Aquarids. Smaller shower but there can be some nice meteors especially with new moon like this week. 7/28/2014 8:44:27 AM |

the following night I had seen about 5 of them
