Stage: I got home from work earlier this afternoon, went outside for a run, came back home, and then went to the gym in my apartment tower. After the gym, I am sweating as I walk up to the elevators on the terrace level, and I join a gentleman (Guy)already waiting on the elevator car to come. Upon arrival of the elevator car, the doors spring open, prompting Guy and I to enter. We do, and join a PizzaHut delivery woman (Lady) who was already in the car. The small talk commences as the doors shut...

Guy: What floor?
EMCE: 9 Please
Lady: Good workout?
EMCE: Oh Yeah.... Did you guys have a nice holiday?
Guy: Yeah. It was great.
Lady: The weather was perfect too!
EMCE: Nice. You know... It's so hot outside now... I knew that we...
Lady: BOILING! So damn hot out there.
EMCE...I knew that we were going to have to pay for the nice weather during the holiday weekend in one way or another.
Guy: eh eh eh, yep
Lady: Haha, yeah. You should try delivering pizzas out there in a car with no air conditioning all day long!
EMCE: No way man... I'll leave that to the pros. I don't think I could stand it.
Lady: haha, no please. Take it.
Guy: eh eh eh, yep.
Lady: ...ugh, lost my job a while back, and my unemployment ran out too. I had to get a job running pizzas cause there was nothing else out there :-|
EMCE: Oh wow, that's terrible. I'm so sorry to hear that! It's so rough out there.
Lady: Yeah.
EMCE: I really do hope that you can find something soon.... Take care of yourself
Lady: Thanks. Yeah, you do the same.

I used to be in the habit of trying to sympathize with store clerks like, "You have a good one, too! Hope you get off soon! "

Every so often, they'd inform me they were getting off soon and heading to their second or third job.

And my lazy ass would just be standing there in my pajamas with a bag of beer and cigarettes...
