They are pretty much air breathing sharks that have been known to rape each other and torment their food before they eat it. They are pretty much "Bro Sharks"

This is rather important. Some TED speaker made the case rather well for the Tasmanian tiger. It went extinct, but that happened after ownership of them was prohibited. It's a lot easier to demonize an animal if no one has ever interacted with one in captivity.

Plus, the hard-core preservationists are full of crap. We do a lot of shitty things to a lot of animals. That doesn't make it okay, but stuff like Seaworld helps make us less afraid of the animals. This, in turn, makes us less likely to later commit genocide.
