what's the best route for a cheap camper shell not seeing much on craigslist. Is this a junk yard item?

doubtful - also try nc4x4 if you're around the southeast

Are you talking about a cap, or are you talking about a slide-in camper?

I don't have useful advice either way but your terminology is a little ambiguous.
