Trying to figure out if I can run the original silver-on-black British tag on my car. It doesn't have the year 1960 stamped into it (as NC ones from 1960 do). Can anyone shed more light on this for me? Obviously I'd keep a current plate in the car.

The complete text of G.S. 20-63(d) reads:

""Registration plates issued for a motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, trailer, or semitrailer shall be attached thereto, one in the front and the other in the rear: Provided, that when only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle other than a truck-tractor, said registration plate shall be attached to the rear of the motor vehicle. The registration plate issued for a truck-tractor shall be attached to the front thereof. Provided further, that when only one registration plate is issued for a motor vehicle and this motor vehicle is transporting a substance that may adhere to the plate so as to cover or discolor the plate or if the motor vehicle has a mechanical loading device that may damage the plate, the registration plate may be attached to the front of the motor vehicle. Any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon the request of any person."

I don't know either, best to ask DMV. Or you could just do it. If the cop isn't a dick and you perhaps carry a printout of the relevant statute in your glovebox, seems like it would be warning-worthy at worst.

^ Yeah, I think I'll just run the plate. Everytime I've been pulled over the officer has been helpful and I've never gotten a ticket.

Not that really anyone would know and I had to look it up actually. But the visual differences between the +4 and 4/4 in 1960 were fewer louvres on the 4/4 (although more could be optioned) and the +4 used the higher body to fit the larger engine (easiest place to tell is the gap between the windshield stanchions and the doors). Note that the 4 seater continued the high body for a while, whereas the 2 seater adopted a lower body.

yeah i would just roll with the current plates in the glovebox like the statute says to do. even if you are in violation by using british plates, you'd most likely get off with a warning, unless you were being a moron/douche.

It has to be a NC plate.

Otherwise that would make no sense and there be no standard that it has or will conform to as far as being registered here.

if its from a novelty store or something of that option you MAY be able to attach it to the front of the car.

Doesn't say it has to be NC. If you buy a 77 out of state plate I will let you know. I drive through Cary daily so I will find out very quickly how bored law enforcement feels...

If you can't use the plate on the back on the car as an actual license plate then it is indeed a novelty plate.
