Typically I troll on this topic and will just say that UNC is better regardless of the context (because it is), and try to play it off as though I actually think that because I'm from Chapel Hill. Is there any real depth to this shit or is it really just modern day tribalism?

I dont think people hate the univeraity historically. Just fun to hate the sports teams but its not real hatred just a sports thing. At least until now.

I originally planned to go to Chapel Hill, but when I got in they acted like haughty, condescending assholes. Their acceptance letter basically said, "I suppose we will grant you the honor of carrying our piss bucket for a while, unworthy peon." Meanwhile NCSU's acceptance letter made it sound like they were actually happy to have me / take my money for four years.

I do not take kindly to the kind of treatment UNC gave me, so I actually do dislike the school, it isn't just tribalism. Can't get nearly so worked up about any other school. But those people...fuck 'em.

I had a few good friends that wenre there, and have nothing against them for attending. I was accepted there and thought about attending, but realized I could better utilize my skills at NCSU (math & science).

My biggest gripe with them is that the vast majority of their fanbase are turds who talk all kinds of shit, despite never having set foot on the campus. And they've just had so many unlikeable guys on their teams. Oh, and they cheat and get a lot of the best athletic talent to attend their university, apparently by enticing them with no-work classes.

pretty much this, especially the first part. also when facebook was still a thing, UNC fans would constantly make posts like "unc-nc state isn't even a real rivalry" and then when we'd kick their ass in football they would say shit like "nc state has classless fans, just wait until basketball season".

It's mainly a sports thing. I don't think it's fair to say that the scandal devalues all degrees that were obtained there. I know plenty of people who went there who are very smart and hard-working and went on to be successful, and I know that they didn't benefit in any way from the no-show classes and other shenanigans.

It's not that if you didn't go to a school, you can't root for that school. Because that's stupid. Root for whoever you want.

But it's UNC fans that didn't go to UNC that tout how great of an institution UNC is and call NC State "Moo U" and stupid shit like that. You can't really brag about the academics of a university you never attended just because you like their sports teams.

I know it isn't limited to UNC fans, bud. They just happen to have multiple championships, have one of the largest college brands in the country (world)?, and happen to be few miles down the road from NCSU. And it's come to light that they've been cheating on a grand scale for at least 18 years. I realize that there are arrogant State fans who excessively talk shit. But in my experience, since UNC has exponentially more fans (many who didn't attend the university), they have many more of these obnoxious fans. Why are you arguing this?

Sports hate is not real hate though. Like, yeah I hate UNC athletics and think it would be pretty funny if they never won another game in any sport ever. But as far as the individuals that attend UNC, play for UNC, or cheer for UNC...I don't actually hate them as people. I hate Marcus Paige, for example, when he's on the court beating State in basketball. But he's probably a decent human being and a generally cool dude.

In sports, you "hate" for irrational reasons because it's not real hatred. It's all for entertainment. Just like hating characters in a move or something.
