I'm signed up for an appy for thanksgiving and my grandma shits her pants if I have to do much prep in her kitchen ON thanksgiving (and I'm staying up there Weds night)
need some ideas for EPIC* appetizers than I can mostly prepare the day before. (I can do little things like assembly/scooping/spreading day of).
*it's a little late for EPIC (I've been SO busy I completely forgot about this) but I want it to be cooler than chips and rotel.
let's start brainstorming yummy ideas NOW 11/24/2014 6:06:54 PM

Stuffed jalapeno poppers. Prep the night before, then just throw them in the oven the next day.
I like the atomic buffalo turd version. They aren't actually very spicy. 11/24/2014 6:23:52 PM

Do you think you could get some oven time? And how does your family take to apps with a little kick? My wife makes some really good (and really simple) jalapeno poppers with japs from our garden...stuff with cream cheese and parmesan and you're good to go.

My wife also makes some cream cheese/cinnamon things that I don't like at all...but I'm the only one and everyone else devours them. No oven time on these. I'll see if I can dig up the recipe. 11/24/2014 7:08:58 PM

^^ I feel like those are things that you can't really make beforehand and take over there (unless she lives across the street).
^ Same thing for that.
Honestly, the best thing posted is probably the deviled eggs. Just make some good ones and not the generic shit. 11/24/2014 7:22:56 PM

I purposely chose items that were designed to be prepared in advance. The knishes for example, you're supposed to freeze for a while on order to keep them together 11/24/2014 7:32:22 PM

Deviled eggs is definitely an option. Other options include sausage balls, stuffed mushrooms (http://allrecipes.com/recipe/mouth-watering-stuffed-mushrooms/), or Spinach Ham Pinwheels. (http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/spinach-cheese-pinwheels). 11/24/2014 8:27:13 PM

I usually go for dips if I need shit done earlier (and especially if I'm lacking a kitchen). My go-to is a dill dip that you can spoon into a hallowed out loaf of decent bread. Use the leftover breadchunks for dipping and arrange some veggies around the bowl too as a lighter alternative to using the bread. 11/25/2014 3:54:23 PM

A buddy of mine always does these meatballs in a crockpot that are awesome. Its just a couple of bags of frozen meatballs dumped into a crock, then he covers it in BBQ sauce and grape jelly.
We just set out a little bowl of toothpicks and people go at it.
Little advice too, don't do anything that requires oven or stovetop cooking. We would throw a friends thanksgiving for a few years and asked people to bring dishes if we did the turkey. Inevitably I'd have people show up with casseroles or crocks that needed to "warm up" in the oven. They thought since we started at 7 and didn't eat till 8 they could throw it in the oven or on the stove while we all caught up. They didn't think I'd probably have a turkey in the oven and my own sides on the stove for everyone.
Green bean casserole is a risky choice to begin with, cold green bean casserole is even worse.
The best were people that brought their own crockpot, i always gave them the choicest cuts of turkey since they didn't create extra work for me. 11/25/2014 4:59:14 PM

Yup. Don't show up to my house wanting to prepare and cook your food. I only have 1 oven, and it's filled to capacity! I'm looking at you Mother-In-Law, this ain't your house. 11/25/2014 5:02:28 PM

I ended up doing a smoked salmon dip and I'm also going to make little one-bite caprese salad things (wedge of fresh mozz, grape tomato, and costco's delicious pesto sauce drizzled with balsamic - skewered with a toothpick)

I made cheese straws.
You know the ones that are like $8 for a box of 10 at gift shops? Well you can make a whole shitload of them for pretty cheap because it's basically just cheese, flour, butter, and a couple of spices. 12/25/2018 10:01:28 PM

most meats get them thinly sliced from the deli, it's only stuff like salami that needs to be sliced and you only need to slice some of it. for cheeses i'll cut a couple pieces as an example and help show which knife is best for which cheese. then just add some plain crackers or sliced baguette and some olives, almonds, cornichon pickles, jam, and maybe a tapenade or something on a big wood board and it looks really fancy despite taking just a few minutes to setup 12/27/2018 11:05:13 AM
