I want a legit winter jacket. I'm thinking a parka style jacket not a puffy or peacoat which I have both of. Something I can wear a t-shirt and throw on and be warm in -15 degree weather but something that also looks stylish. I also want it to block the wind with a hood.

I've looked at North Face, Patagonia, Marmot, etc and haven't found anything I specifically like (although I do like some of the North Face's parkas).

I've decided if I'm going to spend some money I'd like it a better quality jacket not made in China (not that you can't get quality stuff from China). Anyone have any experience with Canada Goose jackets? They have a lifetime warranty and apparently incredible quality. I'm hesitant about coyote fur but apparently all their fur is from sustainable trappers in Canada and I already wear leather and down. From what I've read real fur is far better than synthetic in terms of not freezing, blocking the wind, etc.

Looking at the Chateau, Langford, or Citadel. They each have different features but I like the more modern look of the Chateau. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the huge pockets on the Citadel. The Banff also looks pretty cool as well.



I guess it's just a factor of going and trying some on.

^^I assumed some people had nice winter jackets. Just like they have nice computers, cars, or houses. Not an unreasonable request. If someone owns a Canada Goose jacket it'd be very easy to talk about their experience with it.

^^^^I realize you're a little confused here but part of the reason for a message board is to post questions about things.

^^^I have a couple puffy down jackets but want something a little more durable and warm (i.e. a parka). The trouble I'm running into is literally none of the jackets I've looked at are in stock anywhere in Colorado. I'm in NYC this week so I may take advantage and go try some on. North Face has a few Parka options that are much cheaper than Canada Goose or Arc'teryx offerings but i'd be sacrificing quality, warmth, and features.

^^Why? Any good quality parka is going to accomplish this. They're rated for really cold weather. I have a REI down jacket I got for $67 on sale that I can throw over a t-shirt and be comfortable below freezing. It's pretty easy to accomplish this with a nicer quality jacket.

Yeah I love the cold. One of the nicest things is walking around in really cold weather with a nice jacket on. It's kind of like sleeping with a comfy down blanket.

Keeps me pretty warm even with a t-shirt underneath. Obviously not useful to wear when it's raining, but that's what an umbrella is for.

Cool. Neat style. I'm still looking for something a bit warmer (down insulation). It can get in the negative teens in Colorado with wind chill. I like the idea of a fur hood too as it apparently greatly helps with wind chill and your face. The varying length of the hair disrupts the air hitting your face.

just curious...have you ever actually done this? I don't mean -15 including wind chill...I mean actual -15 degrees Fahrenheit weather.

my feeling is, even if your body is warm at -15, the wind that's striking any exposed portions of your body (even if it's just your face) is going to prevent you from feeling "warm." I suspect you're going to get the fuck inside as soon as convenient. that may be incorrect, but it's my guess.

I used to think I "liked the cold"...then I lived in the Midwest for 7 years. now I no longer find cold weather to be romantic or invigorating, but just fucking horrible.

Well one reason I don't do it on a normal basis is I don't have a jacket that allows me to do it...hence the need to purchase one. I have however tested out friends jackets and that's the entire point of a good parka. I've been perfectly comfortable in below 0 conditions multiple times. If you research Canada Goose and other more expensive jackets they're made to be used by scientists and workers in arctic conditions. Their parkas are made to keep you warm in -25+ degree weather regardless of what you wear underneath. Even a decent Marmot or Patagonia down jacket that's big enough will allow you to stay warm with just a t-shirt on (although not as warm as a good parka).

You bring up a good point about getting wind on other parts of your body. That's why jackets like these have features that prevent this. The real fur hood causes wind to be disrupted so it doesn't blow directly on your face. You know exactly what I mean if you've ever worn a nice big fur hood. There's also wind guards around your waist and wrists. All these features contribute to keeping you warm in really cold weather without having to wear a bunch of layers underneath. Assuming you have winter gloves, boots, and pants you'll be warm all over. There's parts of the world where you HAVE to have all your skin covered or you'll get frostbite. These jackets are designed to address that.

I'm up in the mountains almost every weekend in Colorado and it's normal for it to be below zero with an additional wind chill factor. This is no where near as cold as it gets on the planet but companies design jackets to keep you comfortable even in the coldest places on earth.

My family is from Minnesota and I go up there every year (sometimes in the winter) and after moving to Colorado I've learned to love the cold even more. It's very possible to get a jacket that keeps you warm and comfortable in most conditions. You just have to spend a little money and find the right jacket.

Pulled the trigger on the Canada Goose Langford. Picked it up from Bloomingdales in NYC. They have a very lax return policy so I'm going to give it a shot for a few weeks until my next trip to NYC.

So far it's great. I've only been in ~12 degree weather with wind but it was incredibly warm. The fur around the hood is surprisingly efficient at blocking the wind and keeping the warm air in. I'm leaning towards keeping it but also want to try out the Therme Parka from Arcteryx.

I got it for a good bit cheaper than that. The Arcteryx one is $699 as well. Any decent Parkas going to run you at least $500.
