Actually it came out in 2013, but yeah I agree, incredible movie. Watched it about two weeks ago and it completely blew my mind. One of the few science fiction movies to get every aspect of time travel correct without any plot holes or paradoxes. The best thing to do if you haven't heard of it is just watch the movie without seeing any trailers.
If you are curious about it, a basic synopsis is that a time cop (not Jean Claude Van Damme) tracks a serial bomber through time in order to prevent him from setting off a giant bomb in New York in 1975 that levels multiple city blocks. Don't attempt to read anything about the movie online beyond that, there are a lot of spoilers all over the place.
Full movie is actually on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsU6bBeDddQ 1/13/2015 4:00:41 PM |

The film's global premiere was held on 8 March 2014 at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, United States (US).[17] The film was then selected for the opening night gala of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), held at the Hamer Hall venue on 31 July 2014 in Melbourne, Australia. The MIFF promotional material described the film as a "distinctive blend of sci-fi, noir and crime fiction with a Bukowskian streak."[18] The Sydney, Australia, premiere of the film, which also featured a live Q&A session with the directors, occurred on 6 August 2014 at the Palace Verona cinema.[19]
The film is scheduled to open for general release in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2015.[4] Following the release of two trailers, and a seven-minute excerpt that was published on 3 December 2014, the film is scheduled to premiere on 9 January 2015 in the United States.[20]

Finally saw it, went in with high expectations, and was inevitably let down. This film was marketed and hyped as a genre bending time travel piece that hardly had any loop flaws, but in reality this film was about a girl at the end of her rope that was saved by a time traveling guy that happened to be (through time travel paradoxes) merely a a future form of herself. Let's face it, this film is adapted from a short story by a pioneer in time travel science fiction, a man that basically invented the idea of a self-dependent time paradox, and if you were any bit at all familiar with his work or this piece, then all of the backstory is just completely boring exposition that does not need to be there.
This film has amazing acting in Snook and Hawke as well as some fantastic dialogue, but it just gets bogged down with all of the narrative details. If they had taken the initial bar scene, and extended the writing into a full on Tarantino-esque, tension-filled dialogue between two amazing actors, used the deleted exposition time to build up more of the Fizzle Bomber plot line, it would have been more enjoyable IMO.

Maybe I'm reading your post wrong but you are essentially saying that if you already read the book then you won't be surprised or entertained by story? That's like saying you weren't surprised when Darth Vader revealed himself as Luke's father because you already read Empire Strikes Back.2/10/2015 5:33:04 PM |

The heart of the story is not what I was referring to because that is undoubtedly one of the main reasons why people responded so well to the movie. The problem is that the script focuses too much on her back story and is too heavy on narration. I get it, this is a short story and they have to beef up something. However, they just decided to focus on her upbringing with the space corp and it threw in an added element that was very boring in most parts, and just didn't mesh well with the rest of the story. 2/10/2015 6:37:04 PM |
